I have seen him on talk shows before- he is usually animated, talkative, and very personable...this was weird, concerning..worse than any interview I have ever seen on Dave...but worrisome..is he on drugs ? is there an explanation ? is he depressed ?
I think he is withdrawing... he has stated he wants to retire and it looks to me like that is what he is doing.. retiring from life and becoming a hermit. Like you I hope someone close to him gets him some help.. I think he is suffering from MAJOR depression.
