I suppose I sound like an old fart ("these kids today...why in my day we...) but it seems to me we had a stronger grip on reality thirty or forty years ago.

Look what journalism produced: Edward R. Murrow and a string of CBS documentaries including Harvest of Shame and his attack on Eugene McCarthy that broke the spell of McCarthy's Red Scare. Good journalism exposed Nixons VP, Spiro Agnew as a common crook and drove him from office and finally Nixon himself, with the Watergate stories.

Can you imagine a major newspaper or TV newsroom going after Cheney, even though he is a far bigger crook than Agnew ever dreamed of being? Agnew just took envelopes of cash. Cheney has outed a CIA spy (treason) and helped shred the Constitution (violation of his oath of office).

Reporters and editors these days are wimps, afraid to step on toes, afraid to write and speak the Truth that is the Elephant in the Room. I don't know what has caused them to be so...careful, so...cautious about writing clear, simple declarative sentences that reflect what is really happening.

It aint what I learned in J school.NEWSGUYhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14985481708249946300noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15374623.post-44754214312364204472007-11-08T23:15:00.000-05:002007-11-08T23:15:00.000-05:00Yes, we the people can save democracy by becoming ...Yes, we the people can save democracy by becoming our own media! Excellent RKF memories. Gosh, seems like only yesterday.

Gryphen cites good exceptions to the main mainstream tv news. Why, tonight I saw Tweety actually challenge a woman from the SF Chronicle who was spewing about us liberating iraq. Knowing the lemming quality of the MSM, I have hope that once a story does catch on, they will play it 24/7. Just gotta get them pointed at the right stories, but how?D.K. He almost makes me proud of our media again.

And there are others starting to join him. I actually saw Wolf Blitzer get pissy with a White House spokesperson who refused to admit that Bush never even looked at his veto pen when the republicans were in the majority.
