Helicopter Ben warmed up the presses, fired up the engines of his helicopter fleet, and started buying up a trillion dollars in commercial paper (i.e., commercial bonds).

Think about it. A *TRILLION* dollars ole' Helicopter Ben Bernanke is tossing out the windows of his helicopter fleet after freshly printin' them up in the basement of the Federal Reserve. (Via the marvels of computers, he doesn't even need paper anymore -- just add a few ones and zeros to computer registers!).

BTW, Ben got the nickname "Helicopter Ben" when, asked about the paper I referenced above and posed with the question "what do you do if all the traditional methods of adding liquidity to the system fail," offered "if all else fails, I'll just jump in a helicopter and start throwing money out the window." It was a joke. But not exactly. It was the sort of gallows humor that central bankers engage in when everything looks so bleak that only the unlikely solutions are left.

- Badtux the Finance PenguinBadTuxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01345749557330760251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15374623.post-36966653047060562772008-10-09T00:14:00.000-04:002008-10-09T00:14:00.000-04:00Badtux...you and Hairball are cracking me up...too...Badtux...you and Hairball are cracking me up...too funny....or is it real ???.....Oh well back to the basement to print more money....hairball can I borrow your wheelbarrow..I need to buy some rice and beans this weekend...thank you...

( maybe Badtux will fly over and throw some money at me...)enigma4everhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06589997090173140019noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15374623.post-26859264293593544352008-10-08T23:56:00.000-04:002008-10-08T23:56:00.000-04:00Heh. But today McCain put special emphasis on the rollout of his amended mortgage plan, which is largely an expansion of the housing plan he laid out earlier in the year with a significant increase in scope and costs.

The only other mention of yesterday's debate came when McCain hit Obama over his record on earmarks, but McCain made an interesting slip of the tongue before he got to the biggest charge.

"You and I together will confront the ten trillion dollar debt that the federal government has run up and balance the federal budget by the end of my term in office," McCain began, making his way to pork barrel spending. Lots of folks saying htat comment was condescending & derogatory. A new low for McCain.

Overall, I thought the debate was *A Yawner*.
I did not really hear anything new, other than McCain has gone back to saying *My Friends* in excess.

McCains Nuke & Drill plan does make him sound like Mr.Burns from the Simpsons. He & Palin think it's an EXXXXCELLENT idea. Nuke, Drill, Kill, Spill.

When asked about Social Security AND Medicare, McCain launched into a walk down memory lane.
Muttering something about how "easy" that will be & began naming names of other politicians who had previously crafted plans???
Excuse me Mr. Mccain! We need you to be in the here & now! FOCUS!!!!
We are in a "perfect storm"--or really, a worst case scenario:

• Baby boomer population coming into retirement age & lots of them. Higher demand for SS & Medicare.

• Major economic meltdown. Less $$ available.

• Health costs sharply on the rise. Higher cost.

• Basic cost of living continues to soar.

• SS money was already in trouble BEFORE this bailout. It was going to be 2/3 on the dollar. Now with the implosion of the economy, where is this $$ going to come from?

• Clearly now the idea of putting Soc Sec $ into wall street investments- stock market is obviously a moot point. The market is unstable.

McCain's answer-essentially others have done it with ease in the past was both lame and disturbing.
He may as well have said I'm going to wave a magic wand over a black hat & try to pull a rabbit out of it. Yea right- Palin can be his scantily clad assistant for this magic act.... wink!

Your comment about him betraying his peers (seniors) re Soc Sec $-- well, my friend, you see if you mingle with the oober wealthy, they are not worrying about the breadcrumbs of social security.... they are probably busy getting all their multiple bank accounts that exceed the FDIC guaranteed $100,000 into safer accounts-- as in Swiss, Dubai, etc....
When you hang with millionaires, social security money is probably pocket change for drinks & gambling at the golf/country club.
Clearly to McCain, the rest don't matter. Doesn't everybody make a million bucks??
What's the problem?

I just want to vote & be done. Get Obama in office & have some semblance of sanity & dignity at the helm.Franhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14198689517878201943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15374623.post-34709817627334784212008-10-08T12:40:00.000-04:002008-10-08T12:40:00.000-04:00I want a button that says "That One" Obama won th...I want a button that says "That One"

Obama won the debate, as I'm sure most of us knew he would.

My concern now is the shady McCain Stormtroopers and what they might be up to on election day.Cynthia Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11499286104507733785noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15374623.post-88476406322039266132008-10-08T11:54:00.000-04:002008-10-08T11:54:00.000-04:00Torrance::you just missed the McCoot at his worst....Torrance::
you just missed the McCoot at his worst...and Brokaw at his worst...and Obama did fine...really presidential....but we blogged it...( if you want to read that....some of the comments are pretty funny...and spot on)....

Dean::
yeah...I think that was the last debate we will see Tom BrokenKaw Moderate...yup.....done...( some of the papers were pretty harsh on him- harder than the candidates...but I am not sympathetic...he was horrible)Thanks for your input last night...enigma4everhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06589997090173140019noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15374623.post-27391329262085984532008-10-08T11:37:00.000-04:002008-10-08T11:37:00.000-04:00i aint even watch the debatei aint even watch the debateAll-Mi-T [Thought Crime] Rawdawgbuffalohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08843040863123899426noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15374623.post-8889297944395326702008-10-08T11:28:00.000-04:002008-10-08T11:28:00.000-04:00Nice summary. One thing that I haven't seen mention...Nice summary.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned in regards to how Brokaw framed that Social Security question as "OMFG if we don't do something right away we're all going to die!"
