Lightening Bugs and Small Wonders

So I live on a street with a fair number of kids, and in an earlier post I had written about the Wonder of seeing Lightening Bugs again.I have not seen them since my childhood, and they remain a wonder to me. In the Evening right near sunset children run around with Mayo Jars and try to catch them.

A few nights ago as I watered my petunias I overheard this conversation.

" Come' on , there are some bugs down this way." Said by an older Bossy Sister.
" Stop Yelling, you are going to scare them." Said by Little Sister.
" Here, let me help you with the jar, I don't want you to drop it , it's glass" Older Sister offers as there are oooohhs and ahhhhs from a handfull of watchers.
"What the Heck? WHAT is in THIS Jar ????!!" says the Bossy Sister.
Indignantly I hear said by little sister " Well, , I was trying to tell you, They are NOT bugs ,not really, They are Fairies, and they need Fairy things, so I put some cotten balls and some tissue for their beds, and I put some food in there for them, you know fairy food, Lucky Charms."
"Ohhhhhhh" came the chorus from the bystanders.

" I think Leprechauns like Lucky Charms, but we can give it a try...."Older sister says with great wisdom and patience.

I am totally clueless about lightning bugs, are they the same as fireflies? coincidentally just now, The Science Channel was starting a segment on that very topic when the TV was (rather rudely) switched to The Tennis Channel.

Love the sister talk, everyone needs a bossy older sister. She is the one who usually remembers these stories. Lucky Charms & cotton balls? In Ireland, I think they leave out milk laced with whiskey for the faeries. Summertime Magic! ~~ D.K.

It sure seems like they know more the the Bushmeister does about taking care of God's creatures.

They didn't try to stick a firecracker up there little butts and blow them up.

I wonder...If someone were to stick a firecracker up Bushmeisters butt and lite it do you think he would laugh?

I doubt he would, but I sure the hell would.

God Bless.

Catching fireflies in Chicago is one of my fondest childhood memories. Thanks for bringing it back, Enigma.

Here in indy-anna, especially in this heat, they are everywhere at night.

A little disconcerting when you drive and they smash against your windshield.

Amazing to see them pop in and out and above the cornfields.

About the best part of summer in these parts! ; )

All my fairies eat Twinkies and never, never devils food cake. We called them lightening bugs, too.

I've always wondered about lightning bugs as they are all over the midwest on those summer nights.

Easy to catch.

No no. Fairies DO like Lucky Charms. It's just the damn leprechauns keep hoarding those things!

I loved Fireflies as a child in Northern MD. WHen we moved to Northen VA in the mid-80's my son got his first taste of fireflies and it warmed the cockles of my little black heart.

You took me back... thanks m'dear :)

I miss seeing a lot of fireflies (lightning bugs, and I think they are the same thing). Down here I only see one or two here and there. Maybe the bats keep the population down.
