Saturday Night Music 9.29.07

For some reason Fall, the ending of Summer always reminds me of Mark Twain. Tonight the air is crisp there are leaves falling. The air is fragrant with the wafting aromas of hotdogs, hoagies, and cookies baking.....I took little yellow dog for a long walk, we admired the squirrels busy at work, and Lilly tried to play with the little girls playing hopscotch and jumping rope. And college boys playing football in between the parked cars on the street. There are others sitting on porches eating crispy apples and reading and laughing. It takes anyone back, and those years don't seem so far away.It is odd to realize that my past is colliding with my hopes for the future. An era when one believed anything was possible, and that being "Invincible" was more a state of mind , and matter of Courage.....My neighborhood is full of Law students who argue and the Med students who sit reading....I hope and pray that they value that OUR future will be in their hands someday. I hope they know that we tried to teach them well.

So now a bit of Twain and others...The door is open ...throw your best Twain this way...

" Keep away from small people who try to belittle your ambitions.Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you too can become great."

"Courage is resistance to Fear, Mastery of fear, not the absence of fear".

"You gain Strength, courage, and confidence in which you really look fear in the face. You must do the thing you cannot do."
{ I put this Eleanor Roosevelt quote, because I thought it was Twain, but it turns out I was wrong, I think she must have read him though...}

Coincidentally, I'm rereading Twain's "Letters from the Earth" published many yrs after his death & over the objection of his daughter, Clara. It's a sarcastic collection of short stories about the human experiment. In "The Damned Human Race", I just read this:

"I have been studying the traits & dispositions of the Lower Animals (so-called), and contrasting them with the traits & dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me. For it obliges me to renounce my allegiance to the Darwinian Theory of the Ascent of Man from the Lower Animals; since it now seems plain to me that that theory ought to be vacated in favor of a new and truer one, this new and truer one to be named the Descent of Man from the Higher Animals."

Great stuff, no? ~~ D.K.

Ahhh yes, fall is beautiful, the changing colors of the leaves. Moving into a new season.

more Twain from "The Damned Human Race" (contained in Letters from the Earth) that seem eerily applicable today:

"Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him & goes forth in cold blood & with calm pulse to exterminate his kind ... to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm & with whom he has no quarrel ... And in the intervals between (war) campaigns, he washes the blood off his hands and works for 'the universal brotherhood of man' -- with his mouth!"

"Man is the Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion -- several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself, and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven."

"Man is the Animal that Blushes. He is the only one that does it -- or has occasion to."

Oh yeah, Letters From Earth is a very good read.

Other than Kurt V, is there any writer today, describing what they see/hear in this way anymore?

Hope all is (s)well otherwise! ; )

I'm getting older now, so fall seems to be the best time of the year for me.

I made a comment on your post yesterday and it never came up on the comment section of your post.

Fall is a wonderful time of the year.

My dog Winston would love frolicking in the park with yours. In fact, I took him out walking this AM when the air was still crisp and he immediately went up to a neigborhood child and gave him a wet lick of affection.

Winston wouldn't do the same for your online harasser nor would I. Here are my Blogging rules:

As before Blog Policy remains the same. To respond to an opinion published at the The Cosmic Message I suggest creating a Blogger ID for the sake of convenience. I also recommend not using your real name in any posts or providing an Email address.

Your remarks will be emailed to me immediately and screened for personal attacks, hate or corporate spamming of my site.

You're free to respectfully agree or disagree with any sentiment and others who reply here. However, you must stay on the current topic.

Any violations of the above rules will result in your post being denied. All other posts will be approved immediately after I receive notice a comment is pending.

This eliminates the drive-by neocons before they get started.

A lot of Bloggers measure the success of their site by the number of comments they get. I don't get many responses to my Columns but many people from around the world visit daily to read them, copy my Commentary or Email them to friends.

I'm favored by college students, academia and progessive activists.

My weekend visits here are always a pleasure so don't let one bozo negative detractor deter you Enigma. :)

Enigma, what a beautiful video, and what a magnificant voice.

I wonder what Mark Twain would have to say about the goings on and the dishonesty in Washington today?
