What happened makes me sick to my stomach. Innocent lives lost.
Just heard on the news that the congresswoman's chances for a full recovery are very good.

A letter sent out by Alan Grayson tonight.....

A reporter called me a little while ago, and told me that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords had been shot at a public event. She is in critical condition.

I'm going to let others comment on what this means for America. I just want to say what it means to me.

Gabrielle Giffords and I served together on the House Committee on Science and Technology. She was the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics, and I was a member of that subcommittee. Her D.C. office was one floor above mine.

I saw Gabby dozens, if not hundreds of times, during our two years together. And nearly every time that I can remember, she was smiling.

Gabby is one of the most cheerful, charming and engaging people I have ever known. She's always looking on the bright side. She has something good to say about pretty much everyone. Bad news never lays a glove on her. She loves life, and all the people in it.

No matter what is going on in your life, after fifteen minutes with Gabby, you'll feel that you can touch the stars.

Everyone knew that Gabby would have a tough race in 2010. (She actually won with 49% of the vote.) But I always thought that if each of her constituents could spend that fifteen minutes with her, and see what she is really like, then she would win with 99.9% of the vote. (Same thing about Harry Teague of New Mexico, who lost, and a few others that I could name.) You would want her as your Congressman, because you would want her as your friend.

I know nothing about the man who shot Gabby, and what was going through his mind when he did this. But I will tell you this - if he shot Gabby out of hatred, then it wasn't Gabby he was shooting, but rather some cartoon version of her, drawn by her political opposition. Because there is no way - NO WAY - that anyone who really knows Gabby could hate her or hurt her. She is a kind, gentle soul.

My heart goes out to Mark Kelly, Gabby's husband, and the many, many people who love her. Gabby, we don't want to lose you. Please stay here with us.

The crazy with guns, it has cost us SO MUCH as a country...Not JUST Abraham Martin and John, but thousands...
Still THIS victim was another part of our collective...the common good, an elected congresscritter so, because she had a TARGET on her she had to be attacked, so NOW we will see copy cat attacks, and Andrew Breiltbart, and Rush, and Beck will say see we told you so it's the liberals.....
In my 55 years as an active DEMOCRAT I can truly say NOW I am fearful for our GREAT liberal Democracy....
sigh

The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous. And unfortunately, I think Arizona has become sort of the capital, we have become the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry. There’s reason to believe that this individual might have a mental issue, and I think that people who are unbalanced might be especially susceptible to vitriol.” ~ Sheriff Dupnik

I don't know much about what lay behind the shooting, it is being reported as political here, but American politics does seem to be becoming hijacked by the extreme of both wings.

"It makes me want to holler and scream". But most all to become active again and lend a voice to reason. We can agree to disagree and move on with our agendas without violence and hateful behaviors.

The majority of the mentally ill are not violent and for the most part become victims because of their disease. This young man's skewed viewpoint on life and society and how one should live in it was a major force that led to this bloodbath. I recall when Allen West (R-Fla.)won during the mid-terms and his first choice for chief of staff was Joyce Kaufman, a radio personality from Florida. This woman is anti-current administration and ultra right wing with her politics. There was a tape of her ranting against the gov't shown on Rachel Maddow's show. Her famous line at that time was "if ballots don't work, bullets will". We must remember historically how we've treated some of our so-called martyrs who felt that they had a cause worth fighting and dying for. I fear that there are budding and bona fide seditionists throughout this great country and one just struck!

Dear falling on a bruise, when you say both sides, could you cite any amount of eliminationist rhetoric by any mainstreem Dems or Libs?
Cause I think that that meme is empty and the only side which is COMMITTED to Violence and which carries guns to political rallys is the right so I hope you mean the right and the Far right

Tom - I did mean the far right but i was attempting to be non-confrontational.

Understood, thanks

I tried to post the comments from the Sheriff Dupnink and also from Alan Grayson ( someone who worked closely with Gabby Giffords). I thought what both of them spoke about was poignant...

First Carolyn...
We are at a point where all of us need to be part of the dialogue....and be talking to each other....I do encourage you to be talking to us and others about this event..we are not going to heal otherwise....and yes...we need to be awake and aware and track the rhetoric....I don't care what anyone says-the Rhetoric that has been thrown around for over 2yrs has been dangerous...

Tom...
we know that it is not just the gun issue that is the part of the problem...it is that combined with such violent rhetoric it becomes so dangerous...ie. Angle and her 2nd Amendment Remedies etc...People encouraging hate, and bashing of others...it creates a whole climate where hate is encouraged...I share your concerns....I too am very worried..I feel like in many ways the Media has Legitimized the Level of hate talk and anger..and also that guns are not viewed as the problem...they have become commonplace...accepted..that really bothers me too...I am sorry Tom I am as worried as you are...

Bruised...
I don't know you and I am sure if you are from the UK -not sure which part of the UK ...that most of this must be so confusing....muddled..I need to clarify that the Left Wing is the Liberals, Democrats...and there are the old School Democrats and the Progressives...neither level supports Violence or guns or hatemongering...THEN there is the RIght Wing,(Conservatives) or the Republicans ( RNC/GOP) and there used to be Moderate Repubs....BUT now it really is a party that has gone very very Conservative, and sadly the rhetoric has gotten really ugly now..but just to be clear the Dems, Liberals have never gone around threatening anyone or hatemongering...I know it's confusing to watch from afar and I know our Gun Issues are confusing...so I am sorry...

Falling on a bruise said...

Being in the UK we only get to hear about the big events in America which does give a bit of a lopsided view of things because it DOES seem that the right wing is becoming more fanatical there. We don't hear much about the left so i only mentioned both wings because i just didn't know and i would have been on shaky ground if i had just accussed the right of being extreme and somebody had then produced a list of left wing fanatics so i played it safe. You seem to have some interesting posts and good blogs are getting harder to find.
I can't get my head around your gun laws although that is probably a cultural thing.

Falling....
I even read your post about gun issues, and I sat there and realized that I can not explain or justify our gun situation....I have not a clue what or why or how it has gotten like this.....

About the Right vs Left....I do need to say I have been a Lifelong Dem, a Liberal...I do not know of Any threats of Talks of Violence from the Dems.....ever...and I would be honest if I did....the Right has been throwing around some very concerning Gun Language for the past few years....it's Ballistic Language...."Reload"....
The "crosshairs" map etc...it's been disgusting....
I don't think anyone will be able to produce a Left Wing Fanatic List or threats...I really don't...it's funny because late at night I watch the Parliament Meetings on cspan..and people disagree...they debate....and sometimes they even argue...but they do listen.....it still seems very civil....People caring and listening to each other....Critical Thinking..Problem solving still intact....I am worried that we don't have that anymore...

It's called spirited debate. Amen to your message.
