Losing a Steel Magnolia: Molly Ivins

While still working on my moving project I heard on the news that Molly Ivens died this evening.
She bravely battled Breast Cancer since 1999, and went back into the hospital 3 days ago.
It really tugged at my heart, I remembered seeing her on an interview last year saying how she could not die with Dubya
in the White House. And I found myself cussing" Son-of- a-Bitch".....And then I thought about it, and realized that Molly is not your Usual Angel, but she still is an Angel. We need Angels that can cuss and swear and call an Ass an Ass.
I like to picture her having lunch with Ann Richards and talking about George, and what an Absolute Ass he is.
I like to think of them laughing and telling good stories with That Great Southern Woman Wisdom.
Please God Don't take Any More of Our Steel Magnolias, we need them damnit.

In the end of "Bushwhacked",( one of her Finest) the last Sentences say it all...
She talks about How We All are in Big Trouble and.....
"Time to raise Some Hell".

America is going to bury part of itself. I loved your mental visual...Molly and Ann Richards together! That almost makes me want to die, if I could be assured of living next door to them!:)

This is just awful to hear. She was very brave. I can hardly wrap my mind around her passing.

I remember a great televised debate a few yrs ago between Al Franken & Bill O'Reilly hosted by Pat Shroeder with li'l ol' Molly Ivins caught in between the fireworks. She had such caustic wit, her verbal barbs were not perceived by O'Reilly as the mental jabs they were. You know no one can cut to bone so sweetly as a southern gal, thus even when she called him a bully, he praised her for being such a lady! What magic she had.

Enigma, that is a fine mental image of her & Ann Richards discussing the assishness of bush (a subject sure to be occupying most of heaven about now). Rapier wit and smooth style, the both of them. Thanks for posting this. ~~ D.K.

Very sad, to have to follow up that last post with this news. Molly was the best.

O DK...and Deud...what a loss...and yet we are so much richer for having her wit and her wisdom.....and her sharp intellect....that scarped right over Dubya's scalp....and DK I have been looking for the tape of the O and Al Conference- it was the California Books Conference of 2004....I think....hmm, I will keep digging...( hmm 6-6 says it was Miami....okay back to the search- screw packing...)

Damn.

I don't even know what to say...I just found out, and told Mama she wrote the best obit for Ann; I can't imagine who to tap to do our Molly the honor.

She remains one of my most cherished role models, and I'm already wishing for one more column. The best way to honor Molly is to take her advice to heart, and raise serious hell.

Godspeed, lady. And tell Ann we said "Hi".

Some of us have decided to refer to Bushco now as Shrub in honor of Molly Ivens. She started it, we'll have to finish it!

damn it - shit - crap -- i'm booted outta blogger all day and i pop back in to find this news...hugs!!!

she is a great loss to woman/mankind

Molly has gone to journalist heaven where she's resting blissfully, free of the anxieties brought on by our present Administration.

Usually Shrub has a statement to make or lowers the Flag when one of our nation's great citizens passes.

His failure to say anyting on her behalf is further evidence of his ignorance and compassionate charde.

REST IN PEACE and thank you for your positive contributions to humanity while on Planet Earth, Molly.

Peace,
Cosmic

I commented at another fellow lib's place earlier that I am saddened to learn of her passing (my dad called me and told me) but perhaps selfishly, I am more saddened to think that my dad and I will no longer be able to discuss her columns. We both loved her so much and devoted many, many conversations to the dearly departed Molly. May she rest in peace.
..... Now, this is completely unrelated, but I see that you switched your blog over to New Blogger, and I have some questions:
On Weds, Jan 31st, I logged in for my final time on Old Blogger (when I logged in it told me I would only have one chance to log in on Old Blogger) and I created a post, and then around 6pm, I switched my blog over to New Blogger.
It is now nearly 2am on Feb 2nd, and my blog is completely inaccessible to myself and to others. If you try to go to my blog, this message appears: "This blog is currently moving to the new version of Blogger. Please try back in a little while. "
Should I begin panicking now or later?
How freaking long does it take to switch a blog over?
Is my blog-- and 2 years of my life that I diligently devoted to my blog-- now gone forever?
I've literally searched thru ever frickin Blogger "help" page and group to find some semblance of an answer, but alas, I fear I am simply screwed.
My blog was soooo low tech (zero ads, very easy template, very few side links) what could possibly be the BFD???
I HATE CHANGE!!.... and I know you completely understand given that you've had to physically move and virtually move this past month.

TINA: please email me- I have no way to help you otherwise- and I think I can- if I can't ...Cosmic Messenger, Kvatch and Jamie- might be able to help- I am on line and offline during this move- I think I still have your number somewhere??? even...but go to these folks and see if they can help in the next 2 days( while I am offline)...Otherwise make sure to create a Google account- and you can keep your current email address- it does not have to be googlemail.....and make sure you sign in on the new page- and yes to answer your question Blogger changed me and no they I got NO warning.....so far I am still bumbling along- and obviously have had no time to even figure it out....They also have cut me off of public listings- and my numbers are way down as well as access for some of my friends- esp FOREIGN friends....so I do need to do some serious tweaking.....so sorry Tina - seriously first go to KVATCH- he is a genius....and so gracious about all of this confusing stuff... I will hope for the best...and

Cosmic- thank you for your thoughts...back to the freezing cold and the boxes...

namaste all.....

enigma4ever said...

TINA: use my blogroll and you can even leave messeges here for any of the folks I named- I just realized without your blog your hands are tied ....I wish I knew where I put your number I would call you and help you right now.....okay....well, make yourself at home here....

Molly...one of a kind for sure. She will be sorely missed. I hope he didn't do his little snicker of a laugh that he does...because he couldn't have liked her for obvious reasons. I'm sure she knew that those of us on the left loved her.

Friday morning. Just tried to access Tina's blog. She's still moving. Yes Tina, I hate change too, esp. when what you're leaving was working and where you're going isn't (for the moment, the hours, the days [?] maybe) So sorry.

So, this means that one day soon when I log onto the old blog, it may be inaccessible because I'm (involuntarily) in the process of moving?

Sure sorry to hear about your problems Tina. Hopefully they can be resolved w/o losing everything.

Okay, s'cuse me while I do some backing up before 'going forward'!

Thanks for the warning.

Enigma and all: Get this crapola... here is the email I finally received from Blogger:
Thanks for your interest in the new version of Blogger. An error has occurred that has prevented us from switching your account at this time. Our engineers have been notified of the issue, and your blogs and Blogger account should not be affected.

Please try switching again later via the promo in your dashboard, and please remember your Google Account information as you will need it to switch to the new version of Blogger. For now, you can still log in to old Blogger using your original Blogger account.

Thanks for your patience,
The Blogger team

What a complete crock!!! All of that effort and worry for absolutely nothing. Thanks New Blogger. Just as Kvatch said at his place: I'll happily stick to Old Coke b/c New Coke blows. This damned technology is the devil.

E4E... we're sad here up north about Molly just as the "good" Texans are. Sad deal, we lost another great woman.

Sorry I haven't been around. I've been busy with new Grandkids and the Flu and playing elsewhere lately. Hope the move is over soon and all settles for you.

I love that photo in the post below this one, the Hopper "Nighthawks". Maybe Joe Nighthawk needs a revival. Wish I wasn't so busy. We'll see.

Take care, keep in touch. Mourn our loss then work like hell to change it all and stop the killing.

And Jesus wept, he fell to his knees and wept when Molly died. God, I was going to go, but she looks just like my mom, who has terminal incurable breast cancer. Mom adored her. I couldn't go, I told hubby, I cannot bury my mother twice. Today was supposed to be 13 degrees. It was Molly's funeral. The sun came out and it hit at least 66. The sun shone on Austin today for Molly's funeral. Rest in Peace, Molly.
