About Tattoos....

[Click the title: Goo Goo Dolls]
So this summer I have decided that I need a tattoo...not because I need to decorate my body, but because I have come to view it as a right of passage, something to mark and celebrate everything that I have encountered on my journey especially these past eight years...Any that know my story or my the plight of my own path will know that I am not joking ...Please know that I am older, and so I don't want anything "cute "( like puppies or daisies). I do want something meaningful and maybe something Zen and something exquisite. I am pale and Redheaded and Scottish, ( scroll to last weekend and you can see me), and I am not really very girlie, but have some ladylike traits, so please do bear all that in mind. Now I am not going to tell you Where I am putting the Art, but I would love for you all to contribute any ideas, or suggestions or even your own stories of Ink....Thank you..

Left deltoid, half moon/half sun yin & yang symbol. I got it in Hawaii, the year I turned 40.

I have thought of adding another one but have not decided on a design yet.

By the way I get a lot of positive comments about my tat.

Go for something small, and for God's sake do not put it on your breast! That is by far the ugliest place to have one.

Oh yeah, best to avoid the "tramp stamp" as well.

Gryphen: Hmmmm, Well , yours sounds very cool...I am looking for Something small....creative...and you are too funny...one I am the lady that lives in turtlenecks, so I am not a cleavage type lady...or one that would ever try to draw attention There??!!.....so I would never ever put it THERE...( omg the pain..lordy)....Okay I have to ask, because I am naive ....WHAT is the "Tramp Stamp" ????

With red hair...I'm thinking something with greens...and Scottish...how about a golf course? Sean Connery in a green kilt! Heh!

A baby unicorn jumping over a rainbow.

Either that or a fist holding a hammer with the slogan, "Smash the State." With a ligntning bolt behind it.

Or both, one on each arm.

Yes, something with greens or blues would nicely compliment that beautiful hair. Of course, green--or blue--would depend on what color your eyes are the day you get "tooed".

So, enigma, that deleted comment above: Was that the answer to your "Tramp Stamp" question of gryphen? If so, I protest! Other curious (naive) minds want to know too!

I like the illustration tatoo chosen for this blog. I'm sure all of us have a tatoo story or two, whether we have our own or not. And re the butterfly, I'm sure some of us have butterfly stories as well, so they make for a nice marriage on one's fleshy canvas.

Curious which you'll chose. Will we eventually all be treated to a "premiere" showing?

Hey, Good Luck on the tatoo!

I may be the last hold out for not ever getting one! ; )

I have a tatoo. It;s on my right shoulder, way up top. Afetr my daughter, Maggie, left this world, I had a tatoo done. It is simple rally.

Maggie loved red roses, (and bright red lipstick I might add), so, I put a rose on my shoulder and her name underneath on a banner. The years 1973 and 1991 on either side. I'll send you a picture of it. I did it in four colors by a very good artist.

I've wanted another tatoo but just haven't wanted to put out the money. Maybe some day.

For you? Hmmmmm. Well, to be honest, I like tatoos. I like to look at them. But when you stare and study other peoples body art, I feel a little shy. But that's why they do them in some respects, right? It's not nice to look right at breasts so you can scrutinize the tatoo, (and the cleavage) :-)

I like the lower back, or right below the neck on the back. I'd consider you think about an animal that inspires you, maybe your totem if you have one, flowers and stars around it. Colors, reds, blues, greens and white, yes, white. Not too small, but not across from one side to the other.

Thanks for asking for this input. It is fun to make suggestions to others about such a subject. Please tell us what you decide and a picture of the finished product, of course.

Peace to you. Namaste.

This is the first sentence of my comment, proofread and corrected. Damn fat fingers! :-)

Hello enigma!

A tattoo! What a brave soul you are. I'm terrified of needles and could never do it. My daughter, has a tattoo, however and I think it looks nice.

Like you said, I'd keep it very small-not too garish. With your beautiful red hair, I would say to keep in in tones of green or blue/greens. Maybe a tree, to signify life? Personally, I'm very fond of butterfly's.

I did see a woman with a HUGE tattoo across her chest when I was at the airport a few months ago. At first I thought it was an eagle, but as she came closer I could see it was a bird on each side that was intertwined with vines and flowers. It was very elaborate, but I didn't want to look for too long because I was afraid of looking like a creep, staring at her chest. The one thought I had is that those vines would start to droop as she got older...not a pretty sight!

Well, since you are an Enigma, the yin yang with a question mark as the border between dark and light ?

Or a pic of Rosie the Riveter with "We Can Do It" underneath. It speaks of strong women who helped save the world during WWII and has always been one of me favs.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to your blog.

The "tramp stamp" is the tattoo that so many women get on their lower back, right above their pantie line. It has become something of a joke, as many men feel it shows a woman who may be a little more sexually adventurous then the norm. In other words a slut.

It was used as a joke in the movie "The Wedding Crashers."

I know that you are much too classy to want to attract that kind of attention.

Spadoman said...

Hmmmm.... Caught in the act of being myself. I guess liking a tattoo placement on the lower back of a woman possibly makes me less than honorable. I guess in many ways I have been guilty of less than honorable thoughts and deeds, but never because of a freakin' tattoo!

It is not anything of a joke to me. I didn't see "The Wedding Crashers". I like seeing skin art on the lower back and upper back, around the arms, lower legs. Sure wish I could see, "so many women" that have these tattoos, then I would know that they are trying to atract "that kind of attention".

Seems we're all judged according to a screenwriter's whim, by whoever sees this particular movie, as voyeurs to slutdom.

Get the tattoo where you want and what kind you want by all means.

enigma4ever said...

Spado: You are more than Honorable!!!....don't worry...and I think you and Gryphen both know we well enough to know that I am trying to pursue the Artistic side of this Body Art....that I am seeking it not for attention ( or any kind) but as a way to honor this place in time and my own journey .....

I actually like tattoos on lower backs, one of 6-6 's babysitters' and a neighbor, a college girl had a beautiful Butterfly tattoo, and it was on her lower back, and she said it hurt like hell, and she also complained it was hard for her to see, and she had it because she said it gave her hope...that she was hoping that she was in the Butterfly phase of her life....I liked that...was inpired by it...

I asked for input because well, I don't really know much about it, and also because many creative and spiritually enlightened souls come here and because many would understand why I want to to it...it is about honoring the journey....

enigma4ever said...

Okay this is soooo strange...I wrote a comment that answered all the comments and now it is gone-poof...I hate when that happens...okay, I will do this again...

Spado: You have wonderful insights and ideas, and that is what I need here...I need to know what people think..I am getting it for myself- but everyone has artistic sense and also stories..and that helps...

Gryphen: thanks for explaining the lingo and also for your story of your tatoo and also your persepective....no worries I am going to put it someplace very discreet and also I view this as art, a spiritual issue...not really even decorative...In Asia, hawaii, and Maori cultures it is about marking a place in time, honoring a part of the soul...I like that...

Deud: I like those ideas, wonderful...Rosie...I actually saw one here, on a college fellow- was really well done- looked like a watercolor...

Mary Ellen: no worries, not ever ever on the cleavage area ( so painful and well , just an odd spot)..and I am putting it somewhere well private, I am not an attention seeking kind of person...it is more a spiritual thing...

Patriot: that is NOT my tatoo, I actually didn't even realize where it was until I put on the blog- I just looked up tattoo art and put it up, then blogger like blew it up- and lordy the cleavage area is not an area that I would ever consider- ouch..now the butterfly I like....about the Shut It Down General Strike Idea- I am blogging on that later in the week....promise..

Spado: thanks for sharing about your Maggie tattoo that is so beautiful and that is such a wonderful honor ...and knowing that you have her there on your shoulder every day...and I think you understand why I want it...it is about holding a place in time and Something that matters and honoring it...thank you for sharing...and understanding why I want to do it...and what it means...I think everyone here has such artistic sensibilities and I knew that people here would understand the spiritual aspects of it....

CM: thanks for coming....and I used to think I would not get one...but after reading about them I kind of changed my mind..

Dada: you are so funny...I was hoping that the artist in you would have some good ideas and you didn't let me down...I love the butterfly- just not where she put it...ugh..hmmm, a showing ,...I dout it..it is going to be pretty private...

Newsguy: you made me laugh so hard...a baby unicorn.????..now the other ???hmmm...too funny...

SUMO: well, never ever Golf anything -yuck...now about Sean...hmmmm well not on me as a tatoo...but well, sean anything melts me...sigh...

thanks for all of the inspiring ideas and also making me laugh....seriously I view this as a spiritual quest...something to honor my path...( I know that may be selfish...)..but also as art, it must have meaning...

Mixed feelings: I was told the tattoo dyes can interefere with medical imaging if/when needed, as a result, I don't have any & won't have any tattoos.

I do admire the art though, and am married to a person w Scottish descent, and am Irish myself.
A tartan tatoo would be tacky-- but a Celtic knot in 2 or more colors would be beautiful... it is mandala like, yet has the Scottish origin.

Also I have seen tattoos near the ankle line, which I think, is a cool location.

Actually the only reason I made the "tramp stamp" comment was too illustrate that a tattoo is permanent (unless you are willing to have it removed by laser at a later date), and it needs to be carefully considered. I am sure that the young ladies who had a tattoo placed on their lower backs did not think that it would be used as a source of derision later on.

Personally I don't pass judgment on people and their choices. Unless they are an ignorant man who sends our country to war under false pretenses.

I also don't like the "barbed wire" around the arm look, especially on the ladies.(Hey maybe I am judgmental)

enigma4ever said...

Got Democracy: hmm, that is interesting about the dyes...I am hoping to get natural dyes...like henna or soy or others...( I am still researching the dye part)...but thanks....I love the idea of a Celtic Knot- I will have to research that...

Gryphen: It's fine, I think probally up there in there in the Northlands maybe it also has a different well, impression....I think the lower back is fine, I just know I am too chicken to put it there, I want to be able to watch while it is done...I think...hmm, considering I don't like needles, it helps me to atleast be able to see what is being done...I wrote above about our neighbor that had one on her back- and it was lovely and she was a very nice girl...but I think probally there are all kinds that have tattoos , even probally some that are NOT doing for a spiritual meaning...

and I so agree, the barbed wire thing is totally scary looking...yikes..

hello my friend...

well tats...can't help you with that one - i chose to pierce my nose and navel instead of tats when it came time for me to express myself...

but i can make suggestions - smile - your word is namaste - why not a pic of that? like this pic:: http://www.rock-sea.net/images/india_unity_diversity/namaste.JPG

enjoy - hugs

I'm a gym rat and I can tell you that most tattoos end up looking like green blobs UNLESS they have bright colors, like your picture, or are gray scale.

I have a friend who has cherry blossoms put across her lower back and lower stomach/ab. They are beautiful.

I am sure I am too late for this, but when you mentioned something Zen, I thought of the Japoanese symbol for wisdom/ It shows you have knowledge but also understand that you never know all things, that life is a continual growth process.

Good lucj with what you choose.

enigma4ever said...

Inside Our Hearts: Thank you , that is a lovely idea...the symbol for wisdom..I will look that up tonight...

Claudia: that is a wonderful idea...cherry blossoms...and hmm, I think they are symbolic too..and might even go with wisdom...thank you...

OK, how about this: a scary looking skull, with a dagger through one eye and a banner underneath that says: "Born to Raise Hell," in Old English Script. And you could add a little blue teardrop just under your right eye.

This kind of thing is very fashionable with the vatos in East L.A. Especially if they have been in prison. Consider, this could make you the scariest chick in Cleveland.

Don't know anything about tats, however my daughter got a butterfly on her shoulder.

I was not too thrilled about it, but she was over 21 and it was her choice.

I told her I didn't really like her getting one but it was her decision and I hoped she would consider not getting anymore.

By the way her butterfly was nice and it was a small one.

God Bless.

enigma4ever said...

AnonyP: okay...so the butterfly was nice...that is good...and I know you weren't thrilled....I promise all of you I won't do anything tacky...actually no one will ever see mine anyways...

Newsguy: oh my ....well, I thought I was already the Scariest chick in Ohio.....and hmm, a skull- maybe some worms crawling out of the eye sockets? or perhaps some spiders? no blood ? you are killing me.....lordy...I am so glad that you put more thought into it...

Always the reason I give when asked if I have a tatoo is: "Nah, it's just another mark to help the FBI, CIA, NSA and all my other favorite agencies I designate when donating to the United Way a way to make a positive ID."

sigh Dada you and Newsguy are killling me...you know that...I can 't laugh this hard...

E talk to thorne ! I got over five tats love em all, some are large most are birds and flowers. Its all about the lines..the finer the better the tat. Design one yourself..lotus, and a cow skull is my latest and its very buddhist for me, taken from the Georgia O Keefe skull. I got some feathers too down my left calf..what they can do with color nowadays is astounding. Somewhere i read that fair skin is harder to tat and some folks do not hold color as well, thorne might know if what i am saying is still true or not.. A tat is like a birthmark that was always there, just only emerging now. And you get what you pay for. Make sure to look at all the artists in your areas portfolios. Start a tat discussion on SC forum.
