i love voting here in my small community. i go to vote- and did today- and it is inevitably staffed with 5 or 6 senior citizens. they take forever to look up your name and they ask you to repeat yourself at least 2 or3 times. you have to make sure you slow yourself down- which is a good thing- because you want to vote correctly. we still have the levers here in new york- but still no telling if your machine worked properly. you press the levers and hope for the best. today's crop was 4 or so older ladies and one older gentleman. his first crush was doris day. they then had a conversation about my name- and how the actress who played glenda the good witch shared my first name. initially, the one lady thought cinderella but was quickly corrected by the older gentleman. i cast my vote (for obama) to the wind- and hoped for the best. this is hillary's 'home' state- but we'll see. :) i then thanked them all and we wished each other a good day. no lines. me and two other folks in there. lady before me was a dem- so that's at least two of us :)

We had a paper ballot and a metal box (its a village in the middle of nowhere) The polls right here, didn’t even open till noon..the land of manana is in no hurry ..lol but thats another story..It felt great to vote. On my ballot , the ballots OBAMA was the TOP NAME..haven’t felt this involved and excited about an election since 2000 ! And i notice the MSM is finally slowing itself down ie talking about delegates, super delegates, and the fact that counting process will take TIME and that in california E voting machines….HAVE been replaced with PAPER - YAY one poll watcher when i said ahh the end of our national nightmere..said Amen...i had to laugh..

Sadly. My story is that I do not get to vote until 5/20. Only Montana and South Dakota have Democratic primaries after that. :-(

Anon-Paranoid said...

Hi my sweet enigma...

I had my Primary last week and as usual the line was short. I could not vote in the Democrat Primary since I'm a registered Independent.

I refused to change my affiliation so I could vote for the Democratic Candidate. Since the Democratic Party hasn't done anything to earn it.

So I took my one item ballot and cast my vote on the property tax amendment.

Come November {if we have elections} I will vote for whomever the candidate is. If its Hillary than like I've said I will hold my nose and bite my tongue when I cast that vote.

I posted on my support of Barack Obama and like you it seems that I might have lost some readers since I've only had a couple comments and most of those who have stopped by just don't stay and read the posts.

I can not believe the amount of negative comments I've seen some places about Obama and this bothers me.

It looks like the Democratic Party is becoming split over whom one supports and this don't bode well for the general election in November. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think all those new young voters will vote for Hillary and may just sit out if she becomes the nominee.

Anyway I hope your readers come to their senses and don't hold your support of Obama against you.

Take care and ...

God Bless.

All along Elmwood Blvd., the main west/east street running from Highway 490 to the University of Rochester, the front yards were dotted with Obama 2008 signs and this is New York state!

Nary a Borg Queen sign to be seen.

OK, you know I timed it here in UT. 10-minutes to drive to the poll. 5-minutes to walk in & find out it is the wrong poll. They were very polite, my neighborhood poll had moved to the NEXT bldg over. There was one woman ahead of me in line. She is registered as "unaffiliated" (just like me, but she obviously had not read the rules). When they told her she had to declare a party affiliation to receive the proper ballot, she almost flipped. What is the purpose of being unaffiliated, she asked? The very sweet older pollworker explained how a primary goes. The woman, in a very mean voice, then declared herself "republican". HAH! I knew what would happen next. I almost flinched when they told her she would have to register as a republican (on the spot) to get the repub ballot. The woman grabbed the registration form & yelled "This is B.S." & stormed off. I pointed out to her she could vote democrat right then without having to register. I did not let her withering look melt the big smile on my face.

OK, my turn next! I give them my name, they look it up & see I'm unaffiliated & ask me to affiliate with dem or repub. I say dem. They are shocked! They were right in the midst of pulling out the repub registration form when their ears do a double take. A Dem? Oh, well, here's your Dem KeyCard. They lead me to a machine (I forgot to notice the mfr). I insert the keycard, vote Obama, press "print ballot" & watch it print out. Then I press "cast vote" & that's that. All done, remove card, hand it back to pollworker. Less than 10-minutes since I walked in the correct poll place, I am out of there!

The only concerning thought I had afterwards was how many people did NOT watch the printed ballot (it moves pretty fast on a roll alongside the machine), OR how many people did not actually press "cast ballot", thinking they were done after they first touched a candidate's name. In fact, this was exactly what husband (on machine in front of mine) tried to do, until I told him, as I quickly passed by, to be sure to press "cast ballot" at the end.

As we leave, I note there are now 3 people line to vote & each one is having to confront the party affiliation issue. Too bad, so sad, repubs make you register on the spot, while dems just let you vote.

If I had gone straight home afterwards, the total time elapsed would've been 35-minutes! There is definitely an advantage to small town voting.

AP called Calif a Hill wil & McCain win-- but California voted on paper & only 15% have been counted???

I would think you would have to have more than 50% to "call" a race.

???????????????

Fran said...

PBS is saying Missouri is flipping- they called it for hillary, but now saying maybe not... still too close.

Fran said...

98% votes counted in Missouri- Obama 1% ahead of hillary

D.K. Raed said...

Fran, it depends on the counties reporting in CA. If it's 15% spread out evenly over the whole state (unlikely), then her lead will hold. Same as Oregon, coastal CA would be more likely to go Obama, inland more likely Hill.

Have you noticed all night, that CNN has been calling states for Hill even when there is a very low % of votes counted & the spread is not all that great? But in states where Obama lead, they waited until 50-70% reported before finally (begrudgingly) called the state for Obama?

Mauigirl said...

Lots of wins for Obama - and surprising ones, to me. Connecticut, for instance. Good news!

Voting was quiet where we were but we voted at an odd hour in the middle of the day. I'm sure it was busier after work.

D.K. Raed said...

I'm still wondering about California. Look at CNN online:

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/state/#CA

(refresh) ... they are using EXIT POLLS to call the race, not actual counts! The actual count may take awhile due to more paper ballots this time. AND, don't forget, CA had a lot of early voters/mail voters/absentee voters (hence 10% of CA votes counted so far are for Edwards). They submitted their votes BEFORE any late surge for Obama. These are the votes that get counted & reported first. So the actual votes cast today may not be the same %'s.

Just sayin' ...

Gryphen said...

I will post here first before I post on my own blog, just because you asked so nicely.

I left with what I thought was plenty of time, a half hour to get to a place that usually takes me fifteen minutes, but ran into a huge traffic jam.( I live in freaking Anchorage, Alaska, we don't have traffic jams!)

I sat in the line of traffic for almost half of an hour before I decided to just drive around and park in a nearby Fred Meyers parking lot.

I had my two boys with me and we walked across the street to the Middle School where we were supposed to caucus. (The temp was -8 degrees)

We were all just standing around in the auditorium where they told us to gather, but as it got closer to the 6:00 deadline, they announced that the time would be changed to 6:30 due to the unprecedented number of participants.(Apparently we broke some state record)

My kids were very cranky and did not like the standing around (I was getting a little cranky as well).

Finally they ushered my district into a classroom to be counted. They just kept jamming people into this room until we were almost wearing each others clothes.

After about fifteen minutes they asked all of the Obama people to come out of the room into the hallway. I would say that the Obama group made up 3/4 of the occupants of that room. Then they asked us to go into the room next door.

We all filed in until THAT room was overfilled. There we stood for another fifteen minutes until they finally asked us to walk out in single file and hand them the little blue cards that we had been given after simply writing "Obama" on the bottom of it first. (Kind of low tech, but effective.)

Then we were essentially done. We could have stayed to elect the delegate but I was dealing with a mini mutiny and decided that the boys and I had participated in enough "democracy" of one night.

All in all it was chaotic, and confusing, and poorly organized. I am not sure HOW we ever manage to get anybody elected.

But the good news is that I just heard that Alaska has chosen Obama as their choice for the Democratic nomination! So I guess it was worth it.

D.K. Raed said...

Yeaaay, Gryphen, Alaska rules!!! I did not realize you had to caucus (with mini-mutineers no less). Still, Alaska was decisive, unlike Missouri (show me).

Gryphen said...

Thanks d.k.,
did you see the margin of victory?

Obama blew her ass away!

enigma4ever said...

Hey All:

"WE ARE THE ONES WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR"
2am::::

Gman: thanks for the Great update and for Voting?caucusing in Alaska- Wonderful- and Obama one there by 74%- HOLY COW...WOW...We love Alaskans !!!!!

Okay First things First Cali is still in play....only 13% had already had been counted when they decided to Call it and Perdict it...So let's see what the night brings...

New Mexico: 48% to 48% Still too close to call....
( hmmm, where's Hill's Latino vote ?????)

Missouri- Which they perdicted at 13% of votes counted- they had to issue a Correction : and Obama WON BY 8000 Votes,.

Tennesee: THEY Called it...BUT there are some problems FOUR Counties- BIG ones had to Stop their Counts because of the Huge Storms- these were the Cities and the Colleges- NASHVILLE AND MEMPHIS....

SO HERE IS THE LIST OF WHICH STATES OBAMA WON: ALABAMA, ALASKA,COLORADO,CONNECTICUT,DELAWARE,GEORGIA,IDAHO,ILLINOIS,KANSAS,MISSOURI,UTAH,NORTH DAKOTA,UTAH....

Numbers:
California as of 1:45am
870,000 Hill
602,147 Obama
there are still millions to be counted..

D.K. Raed said...

Gryph, I sure did! 74% Obama was a blow-out, for sure. Idaho ended up 80% Obama, can you believe it?

Enigma, you notice in CA, as the actual count dribbles in, that Edwards % is decreasing? That has to mean the first votes counted were early & absentee votes cast before he suspended. But Hill is maintaining her lead there. That's just the way it is.

Another interesting state is NM. Currently tied 48 to 48. It's interesting because of the Richardson factor. I keep hearing how Hillary has the hispanic vote & how Richardson is considered a top contender for VP to help in that regard. Yet his own state is a tie. So I don't think she can take them for granted.

BTW, are you sure you translated your label correctly? I would've said, Si Se Puede (with an accent over the i in Si that my computer won't do, because without the accent it means "if" not "yes" ... but anyway, I don't think you meant pueble).

D.K. Raed said...

E, we crossed (and had the same thoughts about NM)! And yes, there are still over 3 MILLION votes to count in CA.

enigma4ever said...

eeeeekkkkkks...so sorry Debi- I must correct that...I think I goofed...( I was a dyslexic latin person- not Spanish....so sorry)

New Mexico....is still too close to call 48% to 48%..( I also heard that Richardson did not campaign with Bill there - that is interesting.. or really for Hill....odd)

48% to 48% - in New Mexico...interesting..very ...

The Numbers I posted above are from 145am, and they only had 31% counted...I did get emails and updates- that LA had troubles and also San Jose-
I will get email updates in am...

enigma4ever said...

I don't know HOW many Votes there are to count- on Sunday- it was perdicted that there are a Total perdicted of NINE million Dems to the Polls....

Fran said...

I am not liking the calling of an election so early- last time I checked 30% of teh CA vote was counted-- others they waited for 65% or greater to be counted before calling an election--I don;t like this stuff- being so skiddish of news media calling an election then having to change it later-- if you don;t have enough counted, then don;t call it. CNN took back their calling it for Hillary... and now have it posted as calling it *too close to call*.
Jeez. Take your time & get it right.
Fast-n-wrong counts suck! And I DON"T want to go there again.

enigma4ever said...

Fran I hear you.....I hear you....

they should not be ever ever calling it 90 minutes after the polls closed....
Didn't 2000 or 2004 teach them ANYTHING????
