Friday Thoughts:
I am going to lie low this weekend, as I have a horrendous Cold. I am going to post some reciepes and snuggle under the covers with my hankies and books and nag 6-6 to order some more Netflix. It is hard to negogiate with a teenager about Netflix, unless you want to watch alot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Alias.
But I did want to put a few thoughts and some music up for the weekend.I tried to post some thoughtprovoking pieces for the week, so please do scroll back. There is art, quotes, book ideas ( read the comments).

About My Neighborhood Buddy:
I wanted to post about "Buddy", He belongs to my neighbor, Ms.Canadian. He is one of the sweetest dogs that I have ever known. He has an amazing temperment, and a joyful spirit.I am his dog walker when his mom is at work. So WHY am I blogging about him? Because I adore this fellow. He is merely a pup, under 10 monthe old. And he was diagnosed with Hip displasia and arthritis, and as the weather changes it is more and more apparent that he does have sore joints , in his hips and leg joints. So I am posting about him because I know all of you are dog lovers and many have such wisdom, so I am asking is there more that we can do to help this Buddy ?

Hi Enigma, Sorry I cannot help with Buddy, my last dog died and I just have not been able to deal with another but I have to fight that feeling all the time.

Sorry also about the cold that you have, hope you are feeling better soon.

If you have the time, could you go by my other site Let's Talk About It, there's a story there that I didn't know if it would be OK to post.

Great song by the way, Iris!

Buddy is a sweetheart & certainly knows how to greet a redhead! None of my dogs have had hip displasia, but I know it is very serious & will require ongoing expert medical care. Some dogs get regular adequan (sp?) injections.

All my larger dogs have eventually ended up arthritic. Pain control is important. I use Cosaquin DS (a glucosamine supplement especially for dogs) which I buy online from entirelypets.com

They are also on daily Deramaxx. Used to be on rimadyl, but had side effects. Both of these are vet prescription only. They are a canine version of human cox2inhibitors.

With arthritis, regular exercise helps, but you have to be careful not to overtax them. Their instinct is to hide pain, so I watch them closely for any sign & slow down to a level they can handle. This will be so hard for a young dog. A nice warm house in winter, maybe a daily soft massage?

Thank you for GooGooDolls. Take care of your cold!

So young to have hip dysplasia, but I guess this is an affliction that has more to do with genetics than age.

He sure looks like a real sweetheart. (Sam my editor would love to play with this guy, I'm sure...gently, of course.)

arthritis is bone on bone contact not cushioned by the soft spongy tissue meant to be between the bones.

This may sound cruel but it is not, if the arthritis is in the rear ball and socket joints have a vet school take and cut the ball off one at a time, the dog will develop a muscular saddle that is similar to what they have in their fore legs. (no ball and socket joints up front)

The Pooch on my page has no ball on her right rear leg after killing the bear that shattered her pelvis. we took her to Virginia Tech school of veterinary medicine and they removed the ball and pinned the fracture as well as other stuff, the reason for doing this was ...tada no arthritis in the hip.

peace

Fran's Fav Cold Tonic: Get a hand sized piece of fresh ginger. Cut it up into coin sized chunks in a large pot of water. Let boil vigerously. Drink plain, or w honey & fresh lemon. Ginger has a warming/cleansing effect like no other. Boxed ginger teas do not compare & are no substitute for the real thing.

Dog Care: I know many Vets sell Rx glucosamine arthritis formulas for dogs, but frankly, they seem to be a rip off. I was in the process of writing down the specifics of the Vet sold formulas & was going to to to a farm/feed store to see if there was some comperable bulk item that was more affordable, when my dog companion of 14 years, Lakota became seriously ill & had to be put down. =... (
I think MSM is the animal joint compound of choice. For anyone with $ issues, the vet sold items are quite expensive.

Hope you feel better Enigma! Drink up some echinacea (sp?) tea. Its good for you.

Sorry I have no ideas about Buddy. I've heard that there are some homeopathic remedies to help alleviate the pain, but I don't know what they are.

Anok: thanks...I will drink any and all tea at this point...since my throat feels like sandpaper ;-)
( I am also looking up natural formulas too)

Fran: I do love ginger..always..hmmm...and that is a great idea..I think I will throw some in my mandarin orange tea...I am so sorry about Lakota...so sad..but I know that being your companion was in such loving hands, 14 years is a very long time...

Spado: thank you so much...soup..that is what I need to make for tonight..good thinking...

Walking Man: WOW..you always have the most amazing life stories...so let me get this straight- your dog fought a bear???? lordy...unreal...okay thank you so much for putting forth the Virginia tech idea- that also might be where Buddy needs to go for hip replacement...possible...But I am looking up what you said, and it makes Huge sense....Okay so you better blog the Bear story- you have our attention now...

Dada&Sam: yes, Buddy would love your fella..and Little Yellow Dog Lilly- my dog would love to meet them too...I need to put her picture up- Blogger does not upload her picture for some reason...I will work on that...have a good weekend..

DK: Thanks for all the great tips...and ideas....and yup a bit of Googoo Dolls..is just what I need for my cold...

Lets Talk: I am so sorry about your dog, that must have been so hard...My Bassaatt died in June 2004, I was so crushed, I loved her to pieces...and I still miss her..so I know how hard that is...I left you a comment over your way...I truly care about the Edwards and their campaign, and also worked on their campaign, from 2004 on...so I have strong feelings about his run for the WH....( now my son also is rooting for Obama, so we are a split house....)

LET'S TALK said...

I am sorry to hear about your dog as well Enigma.

I meant no disrespect to Edwards and his wife. They seem like good people and I just posted what was said by the wicked witch of cable and threw in the source as well.

I've since did a follow up on what Edwards had to say. I hope that the story is not true as well.

enigma4ever said...

Let's talk- It is is okay I know that my dog and your dog are in dog heaven romping about...chasing rabbtis...and Abby is looking for a good trashcan to raid ;-).....About Edwards, I just hate to see the Coulter machine at work again..or FOX or any other hatemonger source - that's all...it just isn't worth feeding their kind..I will head over for the followup....

Oh enigma....if Little Yellow Dog Lilly is 1/2 as cute as her name, we know she is precious. You've given us something to look forward to one day (hopefully soon!).

enigma4ever said...

Dada: I want to post her pic, but blogger won't let me for some reason..she is a little blond /yellow Basenji, very dainty and graceful, and she was an abused little rescue by the time she came to us..and she chose us...and we have loved her since second one..when my bassatt died in June 2004 I said no more dogs..but by end of August that year Lilly had found us...so here we are..Lilly our dog who thinks she is a cat and our cat Xena who thinks she is a dog and Harry ( Who was Violet) who thinks he is Human..there you have it..and 6-6 wants a Bloodhound ( yup another Hounddog)...
