FOOD FOR THOUGHT....

**********************
Going to the Grocery Store is so painful....The News is centered on the Price of Fuel, but they should focus on the price of Milk...For those of us that are parents, we all know that they Economy is in trouble and has been for many monthes...Because things that are simple and needed to feed growing Children have been sky high for monthes, everything from Mac&Cheese to Milk, to Baked Beans to Eggs. ( Fresh Fruits and vegetables are even worse). Where I live in Middle America Most of these products are double what they were a year ago....DOUBLE.

So I am curious What are you paying where you are ? Example : Is Milk more than gas? Is it $5.00/gallon ?

I don't drink milk but I want to say it is $5.29 per gallon. Being a farmer by vocation I can tell you they are not profiting from these increases' They always take a licking especially dairy farmers. A lot of people I know around New England have been forced out of business.
From what I understand popcorn is going to sky rocket too as growers turn to things they can grow for ethanol. Gas affects the price of everything we eat and oil is used in most products we use.
I am a make due kind of guy and I can't seem to change and it looks like that is a good thing now. I only get what I have to and I won't get into it here but I will be glad to talk to you as you know via E.
I won't say anything enigma because I want you to be happy! I'm going to listen to Marvin now!

Thanks Patriot....
I don't drink Milk...but 6-6 needs milk...he is a growing lad....I know the Farmers are all hurting too...I try to buy Amish when I can....they don't use chemicals and growth hormones etc....I am a very frugal Scottish gal...so I am pretty good at stretching a dollar...but I have really noticed how stressful it is in line at the store....

( here milk is about 5.00 to 5.40 a gallon...)

omfg..its all so damn expensive in the last 6-9 months. Eggs and Milk are the worst I think.

For folks on fixed incomes..like my family..its hell..pure hell.

But the Fed can bail out Bear Stearns..It should be illegal what they are doing, bailing out the investment banks and brokers.

Mort Zuckerman who is a known Republican has been hitting the cable shows saying this will be the worst recession since World War II.

I am ashamed to say I didn't notice how much my half gallon of milk was today as it was added in with my other groceries. I do know when we were in Hawaii gas was over $4.00 on Maui. Everything is getting out of control.

Larry, I think he is probably right.

What the Fed did today is only a stopgap.

nor cal milk:
5.00/gallon

nor cal gasoline: 3.59/gallon=cheapest around

maybe now we get a living history lesson on what the depression was like. it's all surreal, and not in a fun way.

Don't drink milk.

I drink Light Vanilla soy milk (lactose intolerant) but Jim buys a quart of organic and it runs $3.29. My soy milk is $3.35 for a half gallon.

Gasoline at the Kwil Fill is $3.35 a gallon. I use their credit card for most visits and I don't speed so I try to maximize my mileage.

Food is so damned expensive in New York state. We rarely get out of Wegmans for less than $50 and often it's closer to $100 and it's just the two of us and Ginger.

Hah! Christopher beat me in saying why I don't drink milk. My Lactaid milk runs $3.00/half-gallon. Costco premium gas was $3.37 ten-days ago (last time I filled up). I paid $3.47 for a good loaf of rye bread last week. I should stick with the 88-cent loaves of bread that our local supermkt makes fresh each day. They are lighter than air, in fact I think they are mostly air, but maybe that's good to help me cut down the carbs. And then there's the non-food expenses. My gas utility bills doubled last year. My electric doubled this year. And property taxes are waaay up here in UT. So what IS going on, Marvin G?

Well...there you go...I think we all are in the SAME godamned boat...you all pointed out Soy Milk is no bargain either....( I have thyroid problems so I can not really do soy or tofu on regular basis....) But you all also brought up the GRAIN issue, cereal and bread are really high compared to a year ago....

I buy day old bread, bagels and SALE food alot- vegi's , dented cans etc...and Amish food is also cheaper....so I feel good that I am supporting them....and their food is prepared better- meat, eggs, cheese....

when I was growing up we had a co-op to buy food- I wish there was one here...( also out west we always went to the co-op.....although it was not always cheaper....but the food was better)....

Thanks all....maybe we should all have gardens and make our own bread this summer...and get a goat....and chickens...( actually I would love that....)

Hang in there...

I don't usually by the groceries as I have trouble getting past the junk food aisle. However, we ran out of milk at late o'clock, so I ventured out on a emergency Samaritan run.

$5.15 for ONE gallon!

Gas is $3.15.....at least it was last night.

I drank the gas and poured the milk in my tank.:P

If Hillary and Obama were not so busy attacking one another, they might unite to point out that this three trillion dollar war has wrecked the economy. THat moron Bush haas wrecked the economy with his senseless war. You can't have a multitrillion dollar war and tax breaks for the rich without major fallout on the shoulders of the middle class and the poor. The war has come home and we are on the front lines. And 6-6 and all our children will be paying for it for decades.

Bush will go down in history along with Herbert Hoover who thought the cure for the Great Depression was to liquidate the farmers, liquidate the workers and let the chips fall where they may.

I hope you all were able to watch Obama's speech this morning.

It was a thing of beauty.

I just hope it helps to put the incendiary remarks by his pastor behind him.

I am watching it right now on FOX ( yup....I know...but I missed it at 10am...long story...)wow.....

NEWSGUY:
how do you manage to be so wise ?....sadly accurate....

FUTURE:
very funny....and it is interesting that NO one has come up with nice low prices ( if they did we could all move there ;-)

Horizon 2% Organic milk here in Atlanta is $7.00 a gallon. Gas is running anywhere from $3.25 to $3.40.
5 pounds of King Arthur organic whole wheat flour is now $4.79 which is taking some of the glow out of baking your own bread.
The unfortunate thing is that I think we are only seeing the leading edge of this and it is going to get a lot worse before we see any kind of relief.

I'm just wondering how much longer the media will keep pushing this meme that the people care about the economy now and no longer care about the war.

The two are inextricably linked. The occupation of Iraq is wrecking our economy as is the reason we have runaway inflation. From record high oil prices to deficit spending to the runaway printing of dollars to the $3 Trillion of debt that has been piled on since Bush took office, it's all part in parcel of why we are in the economic mess we are in today.

News today says we have now spent more on Iraq than we did on Vietnam.

Hey...you are sooooo right....It is ALL about the WAR- NONE of us can afford this anymore...we are an economic mess- on ALL levels- and sadly it is a debt that we will have for many many years to come.....( I heard that it is more than all wars combined- Korea, Vietnam and WII combined...I had heard the VA bill is more than Vietnam....I will try to find where I found that ....it was written in February).

Monk:
you are paying what we are here...I can not afford Horizon anymore...that is why I try to find Amish milk...but today I scored- I went to Pharmacy and found milk for 3.29 for a gallon- I was so happy...and so psyched...Cereal for 3.00 ( not six) and Bread for 2.50...ALL Good prices..So I guess I will start shopping at Walgreens...
