OILSPILL Update ....May 10-May 12th Latest from the Gulf Disaster
ABC this am Tuesday May 12th is running story of how BP is refusing to release the Video of the "Leak" and the underwater footage. This photo shows that they can message all they want-the leak 21 days in does appear to be gushing.

May 8th photos LATimes. NYT maps out how the damage could spread due to Winds.

{Enigma Note: I am still at this point just posting important links and updates of the Gulf Disaster, and dissect the pieces that might get missed. As the tarry oil clobs reach shore the extent of this disaster will become clearer. At this point I am still gathering info from Twitter as people post news directly from the Gulf. The Ecosystem and an entire way of life is at risk.Hearings are on the Hill this week, but so far it is mostly fingerpointing and a Blame game.} One disturbing detail that came out today at the Hearings was that the Safety data was not properly collected or monitored by the Drill Inspectors. Halliburton,TransOcean , and BP are all fingerpointing. If they are so hellbent on finding blame,maybe they should ALL share the blame,because 21 days in, it is a legacy they all can and will share.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
USA Today video is a must see, really shows what is going on today,especially along the Gulf Coastal Islands.Aerial Footage shows how horrific it is. (Alabama Register) The Hearings today were concerning as the blame flew around the room and inhibited factfinding and problemsolving, CS Monitor has more about the Hearings that explores what was discussed and not discussed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Government has the most complete page that is updated daily includes updates from Interior and Fish and Wildlife and NOAA. Over the weekend the 4 story dome that BP lowered down failed,so as of now, BP is still trying to dig 2 other relief wells ( which will take 3 weeks at least to complete). Now as of tonight they are attempting a new structure, smaller called a Top hat. The other cap failed due to ice crystals forming,created by the methane that is also leaking at the site. Another concern is that the original Explosion was caused by Methane.When the barge was sitting over the site of the leak this weekend, there was information on twitter ( not CNN) that the barge was suffering effects of Fumes and also that the workers were having to wear masks and be monitored, as well as explosion/ignition risks.
Here is more from the NOAA site that is and all their efforts that are currently being deployed. Here is more about the new Containment vessel the "Top hat" as explained by BP.
At this point it is important that the safety of all those trying to aid the operation be also protected. BP is asking fisherman to help with the operations, but we need to also be aware that they are at risk as they try to save their livelihoods and their ecosystem.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many have been trying to find out about the wildlife and the risks. So far the 28 Sea Turtles that died it was said by different groups that they ate contaminated food (fish). Today there were reports of 6 dolphins found dead. It's important to note that for many of the species at risk, that these marshes wetllands and grounds are their breeding grounds and also where they raise their young, the effects will be devastating on multiple levels. CBS reported on the dolphins in a way that is disturbing. Much of the media is handling this disaster with kid gloves, it is questionable when the gloves come off. NRDC has a whole post about all the animals at risk, from the Turtles and dolphins to the Bluefin tuna.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seafood Industries already examining Layoffs while the Oil halts fishing. BP hopefully will pay many of the fishermen that are helping with the Oil Cleanup.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sierra Club has updates and page that is full of updates that is constantly updated and worth reading and following as they are covering all the Gulf Concerns. Sierra Club has started asking some questions regarding the Safety and Preparedness that is a must read, and needs closer examination.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another group that is working hard to follow the efforts in the Gulf is Jacques Costeau's family and organization their website is following the situation closely.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Karen Beninato of NOLA posted this and gave the perspective that is a must see, it will make you see it from a whole another point of view.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BP posted on Twitter their efforts, today it was about more Booms being brought in.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BP posted other efforts on Twitter about their deep sea efforts using robotics.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Russia has even offered help with the Oil Slick.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BBC has great article on the HairBoom Technology and how it works, but it is unclear at this point if BP is willing to try it, although people are collecting hair already. ( In NOLA they are already having HairBoom parties and saving hair and nylons. The National Guard is already trying other efforts of making sand walls. Other parrishes are examing using Hay to sop up the oily mess.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More to be posted Wed.May 12th.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to help in the Gulf here is the post that has all the Links and info.
May 12th Wed. Update from the Hearings::
Updated by Huffington Post goes into detail about series of errors and problems that created the Disaster we are now witnessing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I encourage you to visit this Link from NASA as it shows all of the work that they are contributing to assisting with this Disaster in the Gulf. Really great work, that shows again why we need NASA.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
USAToday has illuminating article about the Safety Issues at the Oil Rig that were revealed today at the Hearings, from hydraulic fluid problems, valve problems, monitor problems to missing batteries.
I've posted an aerial video from an Alabama resident who flew out over the Deepwater Horizon zone and brought back footage showing the oil spill is far worse than BP or Obama's Interior Dept. cares to admit.
I can't tell you how much rage I have at President Obama for capitulating to the "drill baby, drill" crowd and allowing his Interior Dept. to grant BP an exemption from filing an environmental impact study before they received leases to drill in the Gulf of Mexico.
If anything good has come from this horrendous mess it's Obama has now been forced to walk back his sad energy policy and rethink his commitment to alternative sources of fuel for our cars, trucks, airplanes and ships.
In any event, please feel free to grab the video if you want to use it.
Thanks Christopher,
I will see if it is the same film from USAToday-Alabama Register-which is I think the worst footage so far...sadly...
All offshore drilling will have to be relooked at...even existing permits...
Chris -just saw your video posted-yup..pretty bad..thank you I will post and credit you and your blog..
again.....Jon Swift is linked to this post...the second time since he has died that this has happened..and it haunts me....
One of my readers posted that BP was involved in a blast in Texas City, killing 15 and injuring 100 back in 2005.
This is a real dirty, crooked oil company and the sooner they're bleed into bankruptcy, the better.
Will you add my blog http://spacestation-shuttle.blogspot.com/ in "News, Resources and Underground Papers" Section, Since my blog is dealing with current news on space and NASA, and will be very much useful for the scientist, researchers, youth and many more.
Check this shit out:
Transocean to Petition to Limit $$$ Liability in Gulf Oil Rig Explosion
They're going to try and hide behind an 1851 law. You can't make this stuff up.
If the Federal Court in Houston allows this, then there is no hope for the American people or the USA.
Vijay-
I added your blog-and it's post on the Gulf updates to this post-I could not leave a comment/message on your blog.I also will try to add you to the blogroll this week ( Blogger is giving me trouble.)
Chris:
I have been watching the hearings I am sure they will try to all continue to find ways to manipulate out of responsibility. All three are bent on pointing fingers.And now there is also the BOP people( Cameron) as well. (that is the safety valve).They are manuvering,not problemsolving.
Personally I think they all played a part in this disaster.Either way it will be in court for years.The First Fish kill was found yesterday on Dolphin Island. My sense is that animals won't be found oil coated. there will be kills-between the damaged water, the damaged food and the dispersant,The fish that were found yesterday were not oil coated, they were just dead.and large fish, ones that had eaten smaller fish.I also am worried that at this point people are to call BP for dead or oiled animals-I have been encouraging people on twitter to call other sources. Sierra,WDF etc.
I will be over today to read the petition....I come to your blog everyday-just have not been commenting....( I guess I should..)
Thanks, my friend, for the great reporting on this atrocity. It's important, and you're the central clearinghouse for vital info. Terrific work!
thanks mommaP...
New post will be up tomorrow-with new info and sadly new numbers-turns out that the volumes of this mess are way off-scientists and experts now weighing in..( esp after seeing the video)
we have to keep focused and help the gulf...
