These debates were at one time sponsored by the League of Women Voters. But then the Commission on Presidential Debates was created as a private corporation headed by former GOP and Democratic party chairmen. THe CPD now produces the debates and chooses the moderators and sets all the rules.

Its main sponsor is Anheuser Bush, a beer compay, which requires candidates to sign a secret agreement subject to secret rules.

In 1996, the CPD would not allow Ross Perot on the stage despite his 20 million votes and qualification for $30 million in federal campaign funds.

We have no idea what Obama and McCain agreed to, but one thing is for sure. There was never ever any mention of civil liberties, Bush's shredding of the constitution, secret wiretapping, signing statements, torture, rendition of prisoners to secret prisons, Guantanamo, or secret authorization of break-ins by law enforcement.

Why were these things not discussed? Not once.

I have NO idea why those things are not discussed...BUT they should be- and you are right the League Women Voters did a better job....for sure....

CBS Polls tonight:::
"And tonight's results have, by a wide margin, made it a clean sweep. Here are the final results of the survey of 638 uncommitted voters:

Fifty-three percent of the uncommitted voters surveyed identified Democratic nominee Barack Obama as the winner of tonight's debate. Twenty-two percent said Republican rival John McCain won. Twenty-five percent saw the debate as a draw."

NYT snippet::
Locating Joe | 10:44 p.m. Looks like The Associated Press reached Joe the Plumber, er, Joe Wurzelbacher, who lives near Toledo, Ohio. He did not say who he was voting for, but did say he was surprised that he was called “Joe the Plumber” repeatedly during the debate.

“It’s pretty surreal, man, my name being mentioned in a presidential campaign,” he is quoted as saying.

All our guy had to do was duck, but he did more than that,
he was calm and collected, he brought up Ayers, and Acon, and he told the American People who he really associated with, McSame was angry, and nasty, and kept on inturrupting ... the American people really did not want the nasty old shithead (can i say that?)

enigma4ever said...

why yes Tom you can say that...
Mcshithead...was indeed nasty...omg..
you nailed it....yup.....Obama was cool, thoughtful...and grace under fire....

( I wonder HOW MCCain plans to be humble and apologetic to Dave Letterman- I don't think it is possible...he is consumed with anger...)

Obama clearly won and it looked at times the McCain was getting ready to lose it. Unfortunately he didn't.

However, he clearly lost the debate and did come across to me as a angry old man.

On another note the NIKKEI will post its biggest loss since 1987 and the rest of the overseas markets will also as there all down as of thirty minutes ago.

Our market will take a big dive tomorrow and will continue to do so the rest of the week.

Look for the markets to close a lot lower at the end of the week than it did last week. Or at least that's how I see it.

Goodnight my sweet rose and...

God Bless.

One last thing for tom...

Look at it this way.

We have two Constitutional Scholars who are going to be sitting in the Peoples House and they will take care of yours and our concerns.

Now goodnight all and ...

God Bless.

This Joe the Plumber issue will live on....

that was crazy!

Maybe we need to write a song?

(sung to the tune of the beverly hillbillies)

Come listen to the story of a Plumber named Joe
John McCain said his name don't cha know
said it repeated-ly to date- John, this is a debate
Joe the Plumber was a topic McCain did state
but he could not answer Obamas question
Why all the hate?

enigma4ever said...

Omg...Fran..seriously you need to write Country songs....LOL....

ANON P::

yeah..that is what I think too....the Constitution will be found...somewhere...and Those issues will be examined....they have to be....

TOM::

Hey sorry, once again I missed the "live" part, so just read through all the comments now.

I think McCain solidified his base (big deal, where else were they gonna go) and did nothing to gain him any indies or dem crossovers. Therefore, he lost. No bouncie bouncie for johnny.

Now, I gotta do a "Joe the Plumber is a selfish prick" post, for sure. And why has no pundit mentioned McCain saying the awful JFK assassination was an "intervention"? That really creeped me out.

I watched the debate on CNBC, it was interesting in that they small screened the candidates and left up the Asian markets digress. As the candidates talked more so did the markets fall.

Personally I thought neither candidate was specific enough on HOW they would get legislation passed. McCain would most likely have a Democratic congress and Obama would have one with a "deer in the headlights" look.

For me I always key in on what the minority party does in the vein of obstruction. The Republicans are masters at this, witness the 90's.

I sort of wish that Obama had used a bit of sarcasm to throw McCain into one of his paroxysms of temper.

good to see you...you have some interesting points....it was a strange debate...and if they could talk more about important things...like the nosediving economy and specifics- that would have helped- but timewise it is not even set up that is possible...Shiffer atleast allowed and encouraged followup- not like brokaw and iffell who did " next question".....

Obama did not use sarcasm- but he did smile and laugh when it got tooo tense and that did send Johnny off the rails a bit...

DK::
really strange night eh? I am not even sure what he sured up ....he is one strange little man...and some of the things he said I am unsure WHO he really helped...he has a temper..and really bad manners..so for the base with those- they will love him ( Pat Buchanonon thought he was wonderfull...)

What a relief these are finally over...

Joe the Plumber should be doing a brisk business after last night LOL

But on a more serious note - McCain looked like a moose in headlights a number of times and very angry man the rest of the time.

McCain's "air quotes" mocking women's health made me want to jump through the screen and knock some sense in to him.

But I'm trying to take lessons from Obama and be more calm and rational.

The elections can't get here fast enough for me. I'll be volunteering at our local Obama office to help the time pass more quickly and keep the momentum going.

Quick question about the whole autism thing - McCain said times that Palin knows about autism --

Did he confuse Down Syndrome and Autism? (both of which are serious issues and worthy of presidential concern - but I just found it curious)

I re-watched some clips of the debate this morning. When McCain looks blank and blinks a lot, he reminds me of a turtle I saw on some children's program. Now it's going to bug me till I remember where I saw it!

D.K. Raed said...

I noticed that, too, Lady Rose. I think he is often confused about these things. Like in his mind, all women are the same (i.e. Palin will bring him Hillary votes because they are both women), so he probably thinks all the "special needs" (picture him doing the air quotes) a child could have can be lumped together, too.

Hairball, wasn't it a very shy turtle who would hide in his shell a lot? did he wear a monacle & point to things on a chalkboard? something is ringing a bell there. But then, some months ago I compared McC to a Naked Mole Rat!

Ok, in my own silly way, and considering that it is now October 16 - and we haven't had anything that could really qualify as a "surprise"...

Wouldn't it be funny as hell if Joe the Plumber was supposed to be McOldAndMad's Oct. surprise?

I mean - really. When he got the nod early on, I was worried. Several folks I'd talked to said he was "interesting". But then he chose Caribou Barbie for a running mate - and at first I was worried, because I thought maybe there ARE some folks who will vote based on anatomy...

But then she turned out to be nothing but eye candy - and then I got a bit worried about the debates, especially considering the "style" and moderators - but...

If Joe Plumber is the best they can do for an October Surprise, I think we need to get a defribulator (Spelling Optional) over to Karl Rove's house, because he's obviously flatlined.

Ha ha...Bob the Builder is jealous! Enigma, you are hilarious!!

Sorry I didn't live blog with you and the crew. I am so fricken sick of the debates, I just took a pass on the whole thing. I swear, tho, I'd never made it through the last debate I watched if I wasn't here on Watergate Summer through the whole thing.
