we went swimming with the kids tonight as it is still hot like hades and we just saw the part of China's athletes coming into the stadium and of course, the lighting of the torch.. it was kinda cool and I do get sentimental with these things.. I always root for all the athletes and I think the spirit of the Olympics is awesome.. it looks like we missed some neat opening ceremonies' stuff.. anyway.. Gandalf would've been proud of all them fireworks!![s]

It was amazing....the guy running around the outside- holy cow...wow..(scared the crap out of me- I am such a mom.."don't let him fall"...oye)....

and yeah NBC cut away from the fireworks- that I really wanted to see.... I am so sorry it is still so hot there...

Gandalf would smile knowingly at such lighting of The Wand....

I love watching all the faces...there are so young ..so hopeful...

E..my husband was the first one to 'get it' that the guy was supposed to look as if he was running..I thought crap he's about to fall!! lol..but then it looked like 'he meant to do that'.. phew!

Too bad you're not close enough to Canada, they always have great coverage..although who knows..perhaps they have it online like CBC..hmmm.better check it out tomorrow..

nighty night..I could not sleep but I really ought to turn in whether I can or not..

hugs

The ceremony was just a little bit scary. All those thousands of people, all as coordinated as robots and then the goose-stepping Chinese soldiers. China's police state mindset was definitely on display in the opening ceremonies.

yup...the military synchronicity and percision was scary.....and the masses well coordinated did give me chills..not really a warm fuzzy feel....

And the Drumming part gave me a headache- it was too much of a strobe effect...but the athletes coming in that is my favorite part... and the Basketball player from china holding the little boy that survied the quake- it is little things like that....

nope CBC was blocked- I don't how but TimeWarner must have a way to do that..?I don't know...I know that guy was supposed to look like he was running but still ...gnite...

I DVR'd it, but still have 2-hrs unwatched. How much more can I take? yes there was plenty of razzledazzle, but I am echoing "substitute teacher"s thought. The more I watched, the more I got a creepy robot army feeling. Maybe I just don't understand their culture. Maybe.

I might watch the swimmers tomorrow. And not just for the skimpy swimwear.

Chinese Culture is beautiful...I have studied a great deal of China since my son was small....partly because me friend Rick ( my friend that was a painter...) taught English in China...and so he gave me his books on it....there were many parts of tonight that were confusing- Caliagraphy, scrolls, tai chi,drumming....that DONE LARGE like that ....it did not translate well- some of it was just too large....but some of it was beautiful....and what bothered me was the little children handing the Flag to the Military highstepping officers...I don't know why but it choked me up....( and not in a good way...in a sick at my stomach way).

The cognitive dissonance part of it finally hit me. The opening ceremonies, before the March of the Athletes, was Art, in a way, it was Spectacle and Art. But it was totalitarian Art, the sort that Hitler presided over in the 1934 Nazi Party Rally in Nuremberg, Germany.

Leni Riefenstahl documented that in Triumph of the Will. If you have not seen this classic film, get it. Riefenstahl had enormous resources at her disposal to film this huge rally and she did a stellar job. The film is still studied by filmmakers today.

She later did similar work with Olympiad, her record of the 1938 Olympics, also presided over by Hitler.

Incidentally, FDR did not attend. No US president has ever attended a foreign Olympics, until Bush.

OMg...Sub...you are right..it has been haunting me...bothering me...it had a deja vu quality to it...that's it....I have seen that film - the precision so documented...that is so haunting...

You are right about the olympics...but bush said over and over that he was attending as a "sports fan" ....pathetic....( he used to go to baseball games and get drunk that does not even make him a "good" fan........and there he sits with laura and daddy and Barbara - btw did anyone see Barbara get off the plane ? I swear she is preggars...)

I had another thought when I was at the store....Hitler attended the games...does that count?
