Let's All Plant a "Hope" Garden, Michelle Obama's WhiteHouse Vegetable Garden....Groundbreaking Friday....WOW...

Today Michelle Obama will begin putting in place a Vegetable Garden on the South Lawn, local 5 graders have been invited to help today. You can even read about it on the he Whitehouse Blog and see more photos....The South Lawn is also where the swingset has been placed for the Obama girls. The South lawn is where Eleanor Roosevelt had also planted a garden during WWII, and where President Wilson had let sheep graze. ( There had been GreenHouses and conservatories on the Whitehouse grounds, but they were torn down in 1902 to build the West Wing). The last President to grow anything was Jimmy Carter who grew culinary herbs ( he also had a treehouse built for Amy).Under the Clinton Administration the WhiteHouse Chefs has been growing a small garden on the roof.

When I think of the Obamas planting a Vegetable garden, I think of the Hope they are trying to encourage. And anyone who has ever had a garden knows that a garden inspires Hope....and patience. Maybe all of us should have a Hope Garden too.....

Enjoy the inspiring Video below. All of us can plant Something, container gardens or even window gardens are wonderful too.....Let's plant some Hope....and see what grows.

We discovered we have a HUGE nutria living in our yard. Saw it yesterday..we had seen the scat first.... but could not figure out the source.
This sucker must be 20+ pounds... it's kind of like a beaver with a big rat tail. It was 5 feet from our door munching on the grass.

I tried scaring it off & that sucker just kind of glanced at me like, what;s your problem-- I'm eating!

I made noises, clanged the big chimes... nothing.

I finally got the hand held water cannon & squirted it & it hustled it's ample bustle in slow motion to hide in the giant laurel hedge.

I bet that sucker could mow down an entire garden in one night.

I think we may need to call the Wildlife people & see about moving this dude. I thought these are water creatures, & we are a good 4 blocks away from the river, across a very busy street.

Other nutria I saw before were 1/2 the size.....
we have raccons around here too & they can be a foe of the garden as well.

So do we have to get a dog in order to grow a garden???

Don;t think we can afford a pet @ this time.

I am really glad the WH is growing a garden.... the new residents can go out in the light of day & function like normal people. It is a great trend.
They need solar panels on the roof too.

Yay Obamas!!!!

it is good news isn't it ? Clintons had a garden on the roof for herbs- but I am glad to have a real garden coming to the WH...

( at an Obama rally Obama did say that he wanted to put solar panels on many of the Govt buildings in DC....I hope he meant the WH )

oh Fran...about the Nutria..
oh dear- they are kind of like Cappybarra...very tough and I have heard that they have invaded the NW..and can eat whole forests- they are ferocious eaters....

I think it is a riot that he glared at you ...
( he would not even be scared of a dog I bet...)

if you have animal control - yeah- you might need help...

( our area laid off the Control people- so this year I am alone with the skunks- which is fine - they seem to like me....and my little dog..)

That is great about the White House growing a vegetable garden. Such inspiration for other gardeners or wannabe gardeners!

yeah I am a wannabe....
I try..
but I have lots of Garden visitors nibbling away...

OMG, I'd never heard of a Nutria! Sounds like something out of low-budget Sci-Fi movie! But skunks are OK, Enigma, even though they dig, they eat a lot of insects which is good. Your video almost makes me want to try growing tomatoes again. I am SUCH a failure at growing veggies! I'm seriously considering planting climbing roses instead (the opposite of Tom). I do better with fruit trees. When we lived in San Diego, we had tons of lemons, oranges & avocados. The WH Hope Garden is pretty inspiring ... now if I can just work up the nerve to try again.
