It can happen before you know it, when you don't expect it. One of my father's best friends got in an argument with his wife, who hit him in the head with a beer bottle. He seemed well enough that they didn't go to the ER. The next day, he collapsed at work and died before he could be rushed to the hospital.

It is very sad.

Last month a friend's mother fell and seemed fine. By the next day she was in a coma. She died soon after.

She was lovely, smart & talented -- the perfect trifecta! Such a sad tragedy.

I read the Daily Kos article you linked with great interest. I think we've all experienced head injuries, either ourselves or someone we love, and wondered if something was damaged that is not immediately evident. As the article points out, it could even lead to a malformation that is not triggered until years later by another event.

But what I still don't know is if a ski helmet would've prevented or lessened Natasha's injury. UT is a no-helmet state and I shudder everytime I see a non-helmeted motorcycler on the freeway!
