    NEVER Ever doubt that a Normal Citizen Can HELP...
    here is my story...Of what I was able to do with a computer and a cellphone....

    3 years ago I was living in a Loft in downtown Cleveland when Katrina hit....I felt helpless...so I blogged it- and I saved hundreds of hours of film ..I ended up sending 60 hours of Tape to the UN refugee Committee and calling and sending a report to them as a Nurse- disaster trained....

    I also ended up calling Beer and Liquor Distributors and having WATER delivered to the Different shelters in La. and Texas...

    And I called Baby Formula Companies to deliver formula and ENSURE....( I worked with a Hospital Social Worker at a Hospital that I got on the phone in Texas...never met her- she was lovely)..

    and My Ex and I gathered Medical Supplies and sent them to the VETS for Peace...( including kits to deal with Croc and Snake Bites)....

    NORMAL people can give back and help....no one has to feel helpless....we can help our friends, family and neighbors in the South....

    UPDATE::
    MSNBC interviewed the National Guard about Gustav- 7000 have been activated in the region, and another 16,000 are on standby ( well shit- that is the way it is supposed to be- let's hope that is true...)

    (I also don't want to see Blackwater running around terrifying people again....like 2005)

    Streets of NOLA empty...Any reporters that stayed have been banded, and people that stayed are banded...7000 people in FEMA trailers FOX is reporting that they have been evaced.

    All Hotel rooms all the way up the Coast are full up to Georgia and Tennessee.

    People down there do feel think it is going to be bad....people did leave.

    So that is the good thing...it does look like people have vacated....

    Shep still calls it the Cone of Possibility ( or Hell)...

    MSNBC....

    says that it will hit tomorrow morning...rain has started...Winds and rains have started in Biloxi..this storm is 400 miles wide...so the outer parts of it are starting to reach shore.

    enigma4ever said...

    First Gusts 40-60 MPH....in NOLA...should reach the Coast between 6am and Noon.

    Airports and Trains- the last ones went out between 6PM and 8PM...

    I have read that McCain plans to fly to wherever the hurricane hits and act all President-like.

    In other words use a horrible natural disaster to get elected. Just like he tried to use the Russia-Georgia incident.

    Think it will help him?

    enigma4ever said...

    ahhh Nope...

    McCrusty can fly over as much as he wants....it won't change this....

    and won't make people fall in love with him...exploitive SOB that he is..

    IF he really wants to Feel their pain- stick him in one of the Parrishs ( 9th or St. Bernard) with a bucket, No Boat, and NO flashlight and tell him to ride it out....and NO Whining...

    Ah, yes, and Bush and Cheney won't be in St. Paul on Monday - they're discussing the hurricane. And McCain/Palin will do something to show they are concerned about the Gulf Coast. Yikes. These people disgust me.

    Dick is still in Georgia ( across the ocean ) and George had to cancel his bike ride today...oh gee...

    yeah...we will see what happens..either way the RNC Party has been pissed on....good...

    Well I finally got through - sent you the 'copy/paste' that showed there was no such page as WATERGATE SUMMER......

    I spoke with my mother and sister; both say what an idiot McCain is (both have been life-long Republicans), so they're going to join me in voting for Obama.

    I do think McCain may have shot himself in the foot this time. /ds

    Update...
    MN:::1.9 Million are gone from the NOLA zone...90% of people have left the region....storm is advancing..

    Many of my readers wonder if people will return this time?

    I don't think I would.

    Life is short and no place if so special that I could build a life and a home only to have it knocked down or flooded every few years. It's just to devastating.

    Plus, as climate change takes hold, these storms -- just as Al Gore said, will become more frequent and deadly. One every 3 years now. 3 in a single year in 20 year? No, I can't deal with it.

    Chris:::
    yeah..I don't know what I would do...for some of the folks they have never lived anywhere else- it is a very much family driven town...with deep roots..

    ( now me- well,I have no roots- but I really appreciate when folks do)...

    Helen Mirren used to live in NOLA.

    She said it was the first U.S. city she felt at home. She and her husband bought a home there and used it as their American base for many years.

    I'm sorry I've never been.

    You're awesome..write what you wrote in your first comment here as a post. Pls do. It IS inspirational and perhaps you can clarify that for those of us who cannot claim your creds to any official body (even the liq store co's etc), how we can still make things move. That said, on the TX side of things 'we' are prepared. Aside from lessons learned (cause we got a LOT of refugees from Rita, don't forget that one, more displaced people if memory serves me correctly but not as dramatic looking as Katrina), Rick Perry is on the ball with disasters so to speak, here on in neighbouring states.
    Also, as an aside, Landrieux who was LA governor at the time, apparently was offered help from the feds but she thought they were going to be fine. Hence she did not get re-elected.

    alrightie, back to puttering I go..

    Thanks Ingrid::
    I posted it...you are right- it does encourage folks to make a difference.....I am glad that you are ready- you tex folks are on the ball..good..
