"ST. PAUL, MN—Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was unlawfully arrested in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota at approximately 5 p.m. local time. Police violently manhandled Goodman, yanking her arm, as they arrested her. Video of her arrest can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYjyvkR0bGQ

Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers who were being unlawfully detained. They are Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Kouddous and Salazar were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Goodman's crime appears to have been defending her colleagues and the freedom of the press.

Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher told Democracy Now! that Kouddous and Salazar were being arrested on suspicion of rioting. They are currently being held at the Ramsey County jail in St. Paul.

Democracy Now! is calling on all journalists and concerned citizens to call the office of Mayor Chris Coleman and the Ramsey County Jail and demand the immediate release of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar. These calls can be directed to: Chris Rider from Mayor Coleman's office at 651-266-8535 and the Ramsey County Jail at 651-266-9350 (press extension 0)."

My goodness me! And I thought these things only happen in developing countries aka 3rd world countries.

This will hurt the Republican Party.

8000 protested there today- they were also sprayed- WHY I do not know....they were protesting against the war.

Eventually we do need to see the Video of what went on there.

It sounds like it is a Police State there.

CNN just reported 10,000 people and a *small* number of people arrested that broke away from the main group and caused mischief. I also heard the phrase "rubber bullets" while I was dusting off my TV.

WTF? I posted about raids of homes of those organizing a peaceful protest of the RNC-- SWAT team officers w AK47 type assault rifles drawn, entered homes, had residents on the ground & handcuffed while they took whatever they wanted- laptops, journals, and print material a few were arrested & charged with intent to riot.

No dissent allowed in the Republican circles!
An open forum for all who agree-ONLY.

This is most disturbing... just short of Communist China's invitation to get a permit to protest, and then never approving or issuing (not one) permit.

Any bets on MSM not reporting on this topic whatsoever?
After all Veterans for Peace & many Iraq war vets led a 3 blocks long group of protestors in the streets of Denver- calling for an end to the Iraq war & we never heard about that , either.

Thanks for the heads up

btw..last week during the DNC convetion, ABC's Essa Eslocker was on the phone on the sidewalk when he got basically manhandled and pushed out into the street by a cop only to be told that he was impeding traffic so he had to be arrested. Those police should be under investigation for abuse of power although that said, I'm sure that they were given permission to be heavy handed..I added that to the link I created with your post..
btw.. also captured on video!

Face it. We live in a militaristic fascist surveillance state. THey made a mistake arresting Amy Goodman. She is known by millions of people on radio and satellite TV. THis will only energize her. She had a similar experience in Burma a few years back, almost got killed.

I was at the demo. What happened with the anarchists and Amy Goodman, was on side streets. Most including myself, didn't know what was going on in those incidents.

I saw on a side street, police shoot something. I Couldn't see people demonstrating, from my view.

If you stayed on the main path, you wouldn't know what went on.

Dada says Amy has been released, but no word on those she works with who were arrested with her.

There is a simple reason that these things keep happening. The cops involved and their masters never suffer any consequence for trampling on people's rights.
