THE RISING (10.10.06)

[reprinted from March 13th, 2006]

I live in an old office building that is now loft apartments. Behind my building is a large auditoreum that is named after the couple that built it and their names are in lights on the building. So we call it "The Bert & Iris" . The best thing about this building is that it has sand and gravel roof. Yet to the Gulls in the area it is a Beach....an urban oasis, the Bert&Iris Beach. They flock there by the hundred.

About a week ago early in the morning I watched them, and they did something entirely different. They all went silent and were motionless for a moment. And then with some unknown hidden signal they all rose up at the same moment, hundreds of them. ALL of them. The synchronicity of that very moment took my breath away.
The Rising.

How great to see you back, Enigma, love the seagull scene! "I sincerely hope that when we all rise together that justice will be at hand." That's a translation from a long gaelic poem I'll email you. It even talks about the "hidden signal" you sensed. D.K.

Q. Why did the seagulls rise up?

A. To adjust to the new sea level!

Oh, sorry, oops, I thought this was a game like "How do you tell a Republican's dead" they're playing over at jurassic pork's. Forgive.

ENIGMA!!! Welcome back. Almost a month ago you warned March would be a hectic month for you. Little did we know the 'hectic' would be shared by everyone of your avid fans! You've been missed. Hope this is a sign of your resurrection. (It'd be so fitting this time of year.)

Good to see you back in action, enigma.

But don't take it too personal about blogger, btw. It's been buggering up plenty of other bloggers too -- including yours truly.

Blogger is giving everyone fits. I couldn't upload pics (thought it was my fault of course) and then I read three other blogs with the same problem. It's doing all kinds of goofy things.

Wild! As I was reading this post, my daughter was watching tv and there's a little girl who thinks a sea gull is her reincarnated father. Anyway, I always wonder exactly how the birds communicate the ready, set , go signal. Facinating and lovely to watch.

Springsteen's got a whole album "The Rising." Very good stuff, if you like em.

Enigma, I like YOUR bird better. Mine is but a shadow in comparison with the great gull.

I too love Springsteen's The Rising CD. I grew up in "Springsteen Land" (i.e., in Monmouth County, near Asbury Park, in NJ), I was never a really huge fan of "The Boss" (perhaps I just grew tired, after a point, of the hype). Although, I do have most his CD's and listen to them, particularly the early ones, oh and the middle ones, and the late ones as well. Anyway.

But "The Rising" brought this prodigal daughter of Springsteen home. Maybe it was the 9/11 connection, with which I feel he dealt very sensitively in this particular work. And I really love "Worlds Apart."

Oh, and glad to see you're back E4E. I was getting concerned there.

enigma, i'm glad to see you back but understandably frustrated at blogger and PC shenanigans...FWIW, i am not having the usual problems accessing blogs on my reading list, but antivirus has logged some interesting events recently...

anita, i am much like you in regards to the boss...i wrote him off as just another singer/songwriter in my youth, now he's a staple in my listening habits...

I've experienced this same thing too, only with tens of thousands of snow geese. Breathtaking.

I too experienced how you felt. I live outside a small village on the Northern California coast. There is a large pasture behind my house. One day I looked at the pasture and overnight, it had exploded with thousands of bright red and orange flowers. It was beautiful and I had never seen these flowers in the pasture before. Then something startled them and the thousands of robins took flight. Amaaaazzzzing. I wish everyone would just look around once in awhile. You might see something special.
