dk and pursey....

Thank you for your prayers for my sister. I stopped by the hospital this afternoon and she really didn't look that good at all.

They had too remove her back brace she was wearing for her fractured clavical since she was in bed and it seemed that she didn't know who I was at first.

I ask her if Lisa, that's my niece {her daughter} had been up too see her that morning and she replied "I think so".

At one point she ask me who the boy was. I said what boy and she said the one sitting on the bed. I told her there was no boy on the bed.

I don't know if the pain medication there giving here is causing this as my niece said she was like that at home before they had to take her into the hospital.

This is the third time her cancer has returned. The first time when they found it, was in her breast. She had it removed and had radiation.

The second time was in her lymph gland under her arm. They removed that and she went through chemo.

This time they had found tumors on her spinal cord and a fractured lower clavical lumbar {the reason for the neck and back brace}.

She had seemed to be doing good and I was over at her house after thanksgiving.

My niece told me when she called that they wern't happy with the doctors she had and got permission to change them.
However, none of them could see her til after the first of the new year sometime in January.

She was supposed to have another chemo treatment last tuesday and of course that was cancelled. They found she had an infection that left her dehydrated and she wasn't eating much on top of that. She also had diarreya and when she was at the hospital for her chemo they took a bowl sample and that's how they found the infection.

To be perfectly honest she looked like my mom when she was near the end in the nursing home. But at the same time she seemed like she had Alshemirs cause she had a hard time remembering.

But the scary part was the halucinations of seeing something that wasn't there.

I don't know if its a side effect from the pain medication, the infection she has or even the chemo she was getting.

Bless you all for your kind prayers and I hope you all have a wonderful holiday.

A special thanks too you enigma for the kindness you have shown towards me from the first day I visited your site. But most of all for letting others know and asking them to think of me and my family. God Bless you.

Dear AP:
Our prayers continue to be sent to you and your family. It does sound as if she is not doing as well. I would be happy to talk to you offline about pain/ hallucinations to help you get through this. PLEASE DO EMAIL ME TIME PERMITTING, enigma4ever@earthlink.net, I would like to help, offline.

If these hallucinations continue, you also might need to ask Hospital if someone can sleep at bedside to help with this, as the hallucinations may be worse at night.

For Our Readers and Freinds here at the Cafe:
(1) It is possible for some who are on pain control to have hallucinations, or altered perceptions, if so, it just means the meds need to be re-adjusted, but it will need to be monitored to determine origin of it...

(2)Sadly, It can also be a warning sign of other lesions, so it is good to make certain that the nursing/medical staff are aware of these changes, so they can monitor. Since there are tumors present on spine, this may be something to make sure the Doctors are aware of and ask for a New Scans ( cat/bone/MRI) BEFORE next Chemo round.

(3) Dehydration, lack of fluids or even altered blood counts in some folks can also cause altered perceptions...

If a relative has these , offer comfort- esp , if it is someone unfamiliar, "Honey, I think you may be dreaming"...try not to alarm them that they are losing touch, but help reorient them to what is real in the room..."See you cousin is here". etc.

Dear Anon...we will light more candles for you here tonight at the cafe....
Many Prayers...
namaste.

Anon-Para: these really are the roughest times. I know what you mean about your sister looking like your mom had when she was in a nursing home. My mom died of ovarian cancer & seeing her lying on that hospital bed near the end, we all thought, my god, she looks just like her mom now.

Because she also had Alzheimers, it was very hard to make any sense out of what she said & of course she never understood what was happening to her. But I know for a fact she was much comforted our presence. We held her hands & combed her hair & read & talked to her, just reassuring type stuff.

Toward the very end, she did not know who most of the family members were who came into her hosp room. And she talked to people who weren't there (like her mother & father & older sister & brother, all dead many yrs). At one point, she sat up & looked me right in the eyes & said "are you real?" I had a hard time convincing her I was real until I brought up things that happened in my childhood that she remembered. So, she was apparently aware on some level that some people & things she was seeing were NOT real.

I hope you listen to Enigma's advice & talk to the medical personnel so it can be determined if your sister is having side effects & needs her meds tweaked.

And yes, I will continue to send positive thoughts your way. You will get through this. ~~ D.K.
